I need a bolt in, externally regulated 90-120 amp alternator for my 383. I had a Denso 120 on my RB but it doesn't seem to want to fit with the 383.

I don't care what it is, so long as it isn't based off a stock round back. I have a new Painless based wiring harness, and I've got a few important things to power (stereo system with amp, msd 6AL, high output headlights, fuel pump)

What are my options ?

Where does it 'not seem to fit'?

I'd be interested in what you guys have also, as I'm looking to put something a little lighter weight than the standard Mopar v-belt boat anchor...

I run a 140 amp powermaster based on a gm alt.

Had to go the March serpintine route to keep v belt from slipping.

This is however internally regulated.

It will run 2 small Spal fans a mallory 250 pump
and a class a amplifier.

I don't mind running a GM alt. What did it take to fit ?

It will fit with the stock brackets.

The spacer with the long top bolt will have to be slightly longer . I dont recall the length.

The stock bottom adjusting arm will work with a little grinding, but I use a left and right rod ends on a piece of spacer with left and right nuts welded to it for the tension adjustment.

The downside to this alt. is it takes about 7 hp to run at the full 140amp output. A v-belt just wont work. The march serpentine pulleys work with no slippage.

Late-model, pre-magnum V8 alt's use a V-belt on what appears to be a Magnum-style Nipondenso alt. It looks like mounting those up would be pretty straight-forward, and they have a familiar 3-terminal hookup. Two for the external electronic regulator, one for the output. I'm using the Magnum serpentine setup on my Valiant, but it looks like the alt is the same except for the pulley. Hookup was a piece of cake. My alt is 90A, but larger units are a bolt-in. For my particular install, I robbed as much of the alt harness from a Ram van, and tweaked it to fit my Valiant. The Ram van harness is nice because it has a rigid terminal end with the output/field/ground ends fixed for the alt, and the output wire is like 4-ga piece with a quick disconnect. I run the output straight to the starter solenoid lug, which functions as a junction block to feed the interior and charge the battery.

I have a 130Amp denso, but have to make custom brackets mounting the alternator down where the fuel pump used to be. In the stock location the alternator dosen't fit my 400 block with aftermarket heads. From what I have read the denso is designed to withstand 14,000 RPM at the alternator, so if your max RPM is 7,000 RPM you can use a 2:1 ratio pully setup.

Mancini Racing sells a bracket kit to hang the late model Dodge van 120 amp alternator on any big block or Hemi motor. The Mancini kit fits both 383 and 440 motors. Only problem I've heard of is fitment in a BB A body car which didn't really surprise me. There isn't a lot of room in an A body car and it is a big alternator.

I ran a powermaster 140amp on my old car. Bolted up great on my small block with march brackets and pulleys. I only had to reclock the case a bit to make the tensioning rod bolt up.

Here is the Mancini Racing kit installed on a BB. This is the late model Dodge van alternator which is a 120 amp Denso unit with a V pulley. Part number is MRE6657.

I always liked the looks of this little alternator:

For now I'm still using a reman 78 amp squareback from a late 70's Newport, and have had it for over 10 years. It's fine running down the road but after I put an electric fan on, it's really struggling at idle...even at an 1100 rpm idle it's really not up to snuff for low speed use at the moment. With a belt driven fan I never had a problem, even with a 250 fuel pump running constantly. Time for a change.

That is an old picture of a race kit that I made with a titanium bracket. I only made a few of those. They were lightweight and very stiff but kind of on the expensive side.

I can get a new Arctic cat 4 wheeler alternator put out like a banchie. friend has one on his 14-1 Hemi and another friend on his 12.5 440. Work great. Look a lot like the one in Zippy's post.

Where would you get one of those? Do you have a Part#. I would hate to go to an Arctic Cat dealer and say I want to look at all of your alternators.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Just notified me he can't get no more and I can see why - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Arctic-Ca...p3286.m20.l1116
found a used one on the 'bay' and wow look at the price they are new. Wonder what he was smoking when he quoted me a price.. Although I do know of the 2 I spoke of above.
