Ok wiring junkies, I need yer help! I am wanting to swap my current alternator (whose performance has been dismal to say the least) with a late model alternator out of a 92 pickup. What is the difference in the wiring? Is it internally regulated? I currently have a dual-field externally regulated alternator. If you have any wiring diagrams for the late model alternator, that would be suuweeet!

ez..I put a mini alt on the 440 truck in the sig pic

use an external regulated one and just crimp on eyeloops on the feild wires and trim the plastic off the batt wire

thats it...the stock VR will work and it is a bolt on

mine worked with the BB non a/c brackets and pullys

i fliped it over and used the single lug for the pivot..which moved the batt post out away from the head( they talk about grinding it down to fit)

I used some spacers and a long bolt thru both lugs as a slip adjuster

I had to make the swing are a couple inches longer was all

kinda tight at the feaild wires on the BB head and VC lip,but clears and lines up stright

there is a template in the archives you can print out for a small block swing arm

and IIRC flipping it over will do the same for not grinding the batt stud down on a SB

Thanks mike! I thought the alternator I had was internally regulated, but it isn't. So it will wire up the same! Sweet! How does the voltage regulator work? Does it use a sensing wire? Is there a way to run it so it reads the voltage at the main power junction?

Oh, and does it matter which wires go on which field terminal? I've wondered if they can be backwards and cause problems

Doesn't matter which field wire goes on which field terminal.
