Hi. I've got a TF727 transmission in an '87 Dodge 4x4 and it's leaking from a rod that is located right below the tailshaft on the back. The rod is flush with the casing and is right above the tranny pan. It moves slightly in and out, not sure if that's normal. I don't know the first thing about the inner workings of a transmission and I can't seem to find a pic of it anywhere. What is this rod to? How hard is it gonna be to re-seal?

That is the anchor for the rear band... Properly resealing it requires removing the tail shaft housing & pan... Some guys get away with throughly cleaning the area & smearing RTV over the end of the shaft...

The rod is the pivot pin for the rear servo. It has an o-ring which must be shot. Yes, the movement is normal, more or less. If it is moving a lot it might be slopped out which would explain the leaking.

Thank you guys! What is involved in removing the tailshaft? Obviously removing the transfer case but is the tailshaft simply bolted onto the back of the tranny or is there internal stuff connecting it? Does the valve body or anthing have to come out? Sorry for all the questions

You unbolt the obvious bolts but then you also have to release the retainer circlip that encircles the rear bearing. There is a plate about 1/2 x 3" held on by two phillips head screws that you remove to access the retainer circlip. It is located beneath the rear tranny mount. If yours in a truck, sometimes the plate is on top of the extension housing rather than on the bottom. (12 o'clock rather than 6 o'clock)

But, you will also need to drop the pan to allow you to slide the pin out and successfully re-install it. No VB removal needed as I recall

Once you drop the transfer case the tail-shaft housing/transfer case adapter will come loose by removing the bolts & spreading the snap-ring.. To get access to the other end of the pin the valve body will have to come out... If your carefull & don't push the shaft out any more than needed the band anchor & pivot should stay when they are... As long as your there get the good molded pan gasket from the dealer, replace the shift shaft seal & kickdown shaft seal....

I think the wide portion of the VB blocks access... Been a few years there may be access... If the shaft comes out to far things get more complicated.

Once again. Thanks guys. Not sure which route I'm going to go. I just replaced the front seal that was leaking on the transfer case a couple weeks ago but I thought my pan gasket was leaking also. Just found out the shaft was leaking and not the pan today. Of course I've got the transfer case back in now. I guess that's how it goes sometimes

If you have transfer case I am almost sure your access plate is at 12 o'clock.

The transmission is originally out of a 72 Chrysler New Yorker. I had it rebuilt 4yrs ago and they swapped tailshafts in the process.
