Well, tomorrows the day. After nearly 11 years in the works I'm planning to fire off the project in the morning. I have a couple of questions concerning "pre-lubing"-

This is my 4th engine build/start but the first time I've concidered turning the rotating assembly by hand while turning the oil pump with the priming rod. Do you think this is a worth while procedure?

Also, I'm using Valvoline VR1 oil for the start-up as it has the added ZDDP(zinc). It was suggested that I add in an additive, specifically a GM product called "EOS". The bottle calls is an engine assembly lube but I was told it is similar to the break-in additive that CompCams sells. Has anyone used this before? Is it recommended?

It can't hurt. I've always just turned it in 90 degree increments (four times) back to TDC and prime it at each 90 degrees. I also hook up an oil pressure guage to see what I have both at prime and when I get it running. I don't run a guage but I set one up temporarily just for start up. I use GM EOS. I haven't tried to get any for a couple of years and heard it may be unavailable?I use it during assembly and mixed in the oil at first start. This is on my fender. The vacuum is not hooked up but you could if you wanted to. Good luck!

I normally rotate the crank a few times if it is a first time dry start, cheap insurance that everything is lubed.
Holy Cow Sandy 11 years! Has it been that long? I remember when back on the MML when you got that car! Looks great!

WOW,i've been watch a while myself, good luck. it was one of my proudest moments hearing my 70 runner roar to life.just what i did (if it helps any)had 2 other car friends with me,hooked up temp.oil pres. gauge so i could see the presure during pre start oiling and watch during running time, had a temperture gun to be sure it didn't get to hot for the 25 min cam break in,also only ran water no anti freeze in case of leakage (which i had non) also had large shop fan blowing into the radiator. oh and nobody needs to tell you this but somebody had better get a picture of YOUR face when you turn that key . best of luck
