OK what gives.
I pull of the crank pulley to detail it and it now does not want to line up to the holes in the damper. (Small Block) I remember this from years ago but never understood why they designed it this way. I found in my case the pulley had 5 bolts in it and they (the factory?) left one off..

Still doesn't want to line up. What gives?

BTW good thing I decided to remove it as all of the bolts were loose!

The factory never left one off. You have a mis-match of parts. cast vs forged cranks and balancers had different bolt patterns. Just file the one hole oblong so a bolt will fit.

Hmm I ran the PN on the pulley and it came up 72-79 and it was installed on a 70 B body 318 with air. I would have not thought it was replaced anytime in its life based on my knowledge of the car but I guess anything is possible.

Sounds like a 318 pulley on a 360 balancer or vice-versa. 1 hole is off a bit. What size engine? Either way, just drill or file out that 1 hole and all will work fine.

Yeah, that thing should be on by now, with minimal if any hackery.

WRONG - Ma Mopar did in fact change the crank pulley bolt configuration in the 70's. one bolt being offset slightly. No big deal, use a rat tail file and elongate it so that that one hole and bolt can be lined up. Big block the same way. Not a big deal, you won't be removing very much material. Been done many thousands of times.
If it is the pulley that you took off the engine put it back on in the configuration that it came off, it is one with the offset bolt and will go back on but ONLY in one position. It will only go on one way but it will go back on.

Better re-read what you wrote. You have a 70 car and the pulley is from a 72-79 and you are saying it was not replaced?????????????

Also states that it came off the engine so if nothing was changed, it will go back on.

I was saying I had assumed (hence the question mark) it was not replaced but it is obvious it was somewhere along the line hence the PN difference.

It came off but as stated in the first post it only had 5 bolts in it when I got to it. I thought it may have been installed that was from the factory because I assumed it had not been tampered with but as stated above that is obvious now.

Hole notched and all is well...

Read again you never once used the words assumed. Never assume anything on a 39 year old car.

Thanks I can see how you might have been confused I used a question mark in the first post to indicate assumption or not knowing for sure. I agree it was subtle but I thought its intention implied. (the Internet is an imperfect assessor of ones intention and inflection)
Either way I appreciate the tech info.
