Hello Moparters,

On a '70 Challenger R/T w/ Rallye Dash ... I have an Oil Gauge with a broken needle. I have seen several websites that refurbish these Rallye Gauges and thought it might be time for that for this car.

My question is -- is this something that someone is who is basically a Beginner at this stuff should try to undertake? I can do some very basic mechanical stuff, but don't want to start something I can't finish.

Are there electrical concerns to deal with? Or other gotchas? Or does everything basically snap in and out?

Thanks for any advice and/or any warnings about taking this on!

The best advice I can give is work slow, don't over stress any of the plastic, be EXTREMELY careful of the woodgrain finish and..........
MAKE SURE you lower the steering column!!!! To gain additional (and much needed) clearance.

Otherwise? its not too bad.

On the Steering Column lowering - I noticed some older posts that said this is just the loosening of those two bolts under the column -- and another that said if you lower the Column it will have to be re-adjusted at the firewall??

Is it really as simple as just the two bolts or will I have to do more work on the column to get it back properly?

Thank You.

Make sure the battery is disconnected.

Amazing how an unchallenged lie can become the absolute truth.

Just the two nuts that hold the U shaped braket. You do not have to loosen it at the firewall.

Their are 3 or 4 screws that hold the plastic trim strip on the lower right side that come in from the back side of the dash. You can hardly see them even if you stand on your head. You need to remove the entire ashtray assy to access 3 of them with a stubby screwdriver. There is one more on the bottom of the trim piece, about where your right knee would be. This is an all day thing or maybe a weekend, especially if there is involved!

Thanks much for the tips on this so far!

One side question -- If I was to just want to remove the Oil Gauge (to get needle replaced) -- do I need to go through the same steps (eg remove Rallye Cluster) or is there a simpler way to just remove/fix the Oil Gauge by itself?

Thanks much!

Whole cluster has to come out, can't remove individual gauges.

I've done this before too. One other tip is that the reset knobs for the clock/trip meter are held on by tiny screws on the inside of the shaft.

The best thing to use for those 'really tiny' screws is one of those cheapo eye glasses repair kits that come with a 'really tiny' screwdriver! Then, put a small piece of tape over the end of the knob, cause if you lose that 'really tiny' screw then, yep you guessed it, you'll be s-----d !
