The tach doesn't have anything to do with the distributer unless it's cable driven. You need the tach wire attached to the negative coil post.

We've(between my buddy and I) got an RB dizzy and a B dizzy that are both points and his 70 Challenger had it also. There are big honking blocks between the vacuum advance and the dizzy. These aren't factory?

Some '70 engines had a distributor retard solenoid. It connected to a "run" ignition source, and the second wire hooked to a switch contact on the carb. When the carb was at "curb idle" (warmed up) the switch on the carb would activate the solenoid and retard the timing at idle--for emission control.

Now this is making sense. We just assumed that it was for the tach, but the more I thought about it why would the tach be attached to the vacuum pod/advance.

Ya, I was just telling him this morning that we need to get a picture of them and post it. I'm trying to search the net for a picture now, but........

It's a little hard to see, but you can see a wire going to this one.

Nope, first started showing up on a few 1970 big block applications and continued on most 71 and later big block applications.
