And..... This may be a Sweptside Californian?? Sure looks like the same type of custom paint. Probably no such thing because what they wanted to sell were their glass fender conversions. But after they were shut down for using the generic motors design, maybe they did some swepts'?? woulda been after 77 though so back to... probably not but cool truck any way. Was on Craigs up in Se-tac area.

1978 Top Hand / Sorry. Does anyone know at what point the turn signal lenses were switched to amber? All my 77's trucks (not top hands) have clear -my '78 had amber.

Hey guys, I'm from the muscle car side. I have recently been trying to identify a late 70's early 80s truck, it is a step side, it is white, with large almost panel like red sides and fairly sizable black panel like bottom/base again a decal or graohics. Any idea what I am looking at, sorry no pics and I haven't been able to get a close look at it.
Thanks for the education.

Nothing sounding familiar here..Can you determine what year it is? If truck is still painted factory color under dash/seats compare to fenders, bed etc..shape of rear fenders...2 or 4 wheel drive..dont know about early '80s but alot of these trucks pictured in later '70s were not documented by Chrysler( a.k.a regional/dealer put together conversions)some of which could be new to everybody.See if decals appear to be original time frame...Lets see those pictures !!

No pics, I'll try to get a better look at it this weekend, I have seen them before or maybe the same truck several times, it maybe a local thing though.

1978 Dodge Round Up 4X4 W150...I've been hoping to find a picture of one in better original condition than mine but so far no volunteers The best info I have is from member *79POWERWAGON*/*DYNOTUNE* (Thanks) The "Round Up" trucks was a limited/regional/promotional package that was intended to increase sales of 4X4's in the '78/'79/'80 model years. All trucks(including Ramchargers) would have had the Round Up decal on the rear of bed (but not necessarily the stripes down the sides).Optional were big blocks and 5 slot chrome wheels like the Red Express.I do not have the original tailgate to see if spur/western theme decals matched rest of truck. My truck is not that heavily optioned:plain bench seat-no tuff wheel-vinyl floor mat, but did come with 400/4bbl 727/np203-light conv.package and chrome front and rear bumpers to match wheels, other Round Up's may have more options depending on location or specs.of dealership orders.Round Ups were avail.in Brite Tan Poly metallic(AY70MU3),black and ...? Info or corrections on this or any other special(decal)packages always welcomed. Thanks A.l. * David-I hope to order book soon

Finding factory pictures/info of these is getting pretty slim.I think I have about a zillion pictures of trucks that I have found online at some point or other, some of which probably belong to you guys,is it a bad ideal to post pictures of someone else's truck or with no info?

possibly all big blocks and left the factory with 5 slot chrome wheels like the Red Express. nope, they were an option.... round up package trucks were available until 1980, and were also seen on ramchargers too.

Was the Marksman available in the 70s? I remember a really nice 84 on ebay a while back. I couldn't find pictures of one either.

think it was 84 and possibly 85 too....you got a winchester 30-30 lever action when you bought one of those trucks...

Do you know if there would be any info on the radiator core support tag that would designate the decal packages applied to these (or any) trucks? If no build sheet is found to decode or no original decals still present is there any way track info on non-obvious trucks?Packages with specific paint schemes(Palomino,Macho)would be easy to spot even without decals, check paint codes or if any original paint was left in door wells etc..what about the ones that no longer wear their stripes?

1979 Orange Blossom Special / Warlock ? I know this truck is from a previous post and listed as a Warlock, has chrome sidesteps/'79 Warlock stripes, but it is also missing the crests and stripes appear to be white. Is it correct to say that ALL Warlocks '76-'79 had Gold pinstripes in/outside,crests and chrome sidesteps? Maybe the stripes could have faded white over time but you would think the crests would still be there.I have never seen a real Orange Blossom Special don't they wear the same stripes as the True Spirit with a different Logo on tailgate? Were Orange Blossom Specials only availible in 2WD versions.Anyone know this truck,is it original or restored? Thanks - the Green talking Parrot * Determined to be a '79 Warlock as Dynotune stated-This truck is painted in Sunburst Orange (AY69SY3).'79 was the first year for this paint code/shade of orange, any '78 models would have been SunRISE Orange-I do not have a paint code yet.

to answer your question, yes some of the models had a trim code for the special paint/decals on the core support tag. As well, it denotes the paint coded, which also potentially give away what it is....so long as it still has the core tag...

Now that the striping is done I can add my 1976 True Spirit (the original color was Sable Brown).

Warlocks show their butts!? Again probably trecking old ground here.. Picture #1 1976-77 Warlock Stripes (Same as True Spirits.) Picture #2 1978 only Warlock Stripes (Bed changed- no more reverse lights under tailgate) Picture #3 Warlock rear window stripe-was this also only on '78 trucks? Picture #4 1979 ? I thought all '79 trucks had WARLOCK II on tailgate. Are the stripes correct for '79? Did '76&'77 have the larger crests on fenders/tailgate while '78 &'79 had smaller or was this depending on year vs. 2 or 4 wheel drive? Did the Warlock package include short chrome mirrors only or were big mirrors optional? Did the Warlock package include chrome around cab drip edge molding or was it also optional? Sorry for all the questions but now 30 years after the fact when they were new, alot of things have been changed, repainted, swapped, added on etc...Kinda like reconstructing bones while never having seen a dinosaur

Hey Mike- Again awesome truck. What all info do you know about the True Spirit trucks? My understanding is that they were introduced at the same time as the Warlocks and the Warlocks proved more popular.Obviously they were made in '76 but earlier pic. here is a '77 sweptline.Did the True Spirits only last for 2 model years?I think probably some True Spirits could be mistaked for Warlocks/Orange Blossoms etc..if any or partial stripes left at all. Were True Spirits only offered in limited colors like Warlocks?Warlocks in '77 only available in black/red/green-same in '76? I have seen listing of a '76 orange Warlock, could be mistaken identity, were True Spirits only brown in '76 ? My thoughts are maybe color was used to separate the different decal packages.

“Facts” that I have found about the True Spirits are scarce and often contradictory even when coming from the same source. Here is what I have found out and a few suppositions (that make sense to me anyway). I want to preface this with I AM NOT AN EXPERT ON THESE TRUCKS. The following is just what I have read and surmised.
Chrysler historical has no records on the True Spirits. The archives were apparently in the process of moving during the period the trucks were built so apparently things like build sheets or IBM cards were even saved. As a trim package there is nothing specific in the VIN to identify a real TS.
The first batch of True Spirits were released by Chrysler along with the first batch of Warlocks to test market reaction to a factory custom truck. One source I have says “approximately 200” and another says “less than 200” True Spirits were built in 76.
I have read the Warlocks and True Spirits were sent to LA “and” San Francisco but another book seems to indicate only Warlocks went to LA and the initial True Spirits went to SF. All were supposed to be 100 series Shortbed Stepsides and the True Spirits were available in 2WD only.
I “believe” all the original Warlocks and True Spirits test vehicles were factory done. When the Warlock was chosen for nation wide release the True Spirit was relegated to a dealer installed California only package thru 1979 (based on a picture of what was supposed to be a 79 truck I saw in the internet. They (the original True Spirits) were supposed to be limited to a few select colors like the Warlocks. However as a dealer option the stripes could conceivably be applied to any color truck. I have see pictures of both long and short bed sweptline True Spirits and short bed Utiline in both 2 and 4WD.
To me it appears the True Spirits were intended as kind of a striped down (cheaper) version of the Warlock. The ones I have seen have painted instead of chrome steps, the pin striping lacks the added flourishes found on the Warlocks, they don’t appear to have come with side racks, and the dashes and inside of the doors do not appear to have been pin striped. I have heard other owners mention the lack of factory options (like AC, Tuff Wheel or bucket seats) on their truck, and the only options on mine were the 440, PS and PBs, not even a radio) From what I’ve read the most common engine for the original True Spirits were the slant 6 and 318. In the 76 Model year it appears that the tailgates had Dodge instead on True Spirit decals on them like 76 Warlocks.
I suspect the True Spirit package (after the WARLOCK was selected for nation wide production) was probably used by a few dealers to help “fancy up” dealer inventory of plain solid color trucks.

Mike ,Excellent info-sounds like an expert to me. How did special package trucks work. If I walked into a dealership in 1976 and said " 1 Dodge True Spirit please" it would come with the stripe package or ordered a Warlock -Stripes/Chrome step, wagon wheels..did True Spirits have specific wheels/decal colors?Could you order the True Spirit or Warlock package and upgrade anything from there, say window trim, bed cover, dual exhaust, side pipes,4 speed,Tuff wheel,Sure Grip,Painted in headlight surrounds(for '77/'78) etc....

As the “original” Warlocks and True Spirits were factory produced to test market reaction and I think it would have been pretty much the factory that determined what options were put on the original trucks……..I’m guessing kind of a mixed bag of things to see what the public reacted favorably to.
After June 11 1976 when the Warlock became part of the Adult Toy Series the trucks probably took different paths.
The trucks would have been ordered as Warlocks and that package would have been in specific Warlock colors or a “999” special order paint. The Warlock package cost an additional $1,135 in 1976 and would have included specific items standard to the package that besides the stripes would include the chrome steps, chrome bumpers,Tuff Wheel, Spoke Wheels, side boards, and bucket seats. The person ordering the truck could have additionally added other options such as engine size, 4wd, AC, PS, upgraded stereo etc…..and probably even have requested deletion of certain Warlock specific items i.e. standard steering wheel instead of Tuff Wheel, stock steel wheels (especially if he were planning on adding aftermarket wheels), bench seat etc and been given credit for the downgrades. The Truck would have been delivered to the dealer as ordered.
In the case of the True Spirits being a dealer installed option means just that. The customer (or dealer) would have ordered the truck in any color with as many or as few options as they liked. There would have been a part number available for the stripe kit that would be ordered separately and installed in house at the dealer (or farmed out) after they took delivery of the truck. This would likely have only shown up on the dealer invoice that the customer received and be the only documentation that it was in fact a True Spirit.
That being said at this point I would consider almost any True Spirit that looks to have its 30 year old paint and stripes intact as legitimate. The reasons being;
it is currently a little know package,
no one is currently and as far as I know ever did reproduce the stripe kits for them,
as such a little known package that would be very hard to verify without original paperwork the demand does not exist for it as is the case with the LRT and Warlocks. Without the demand the money is just not there at this time to clone one for profit as it would be to cone LRE or Warlock.

Thanks for the info!! Dodge trucks are not that popular in my area and if you do get lucky enough to see a 70's era one on the road it's it probably me driving it..With my junkyard adventures I have ran across a Dude II (now crushed ),a Palomino,a '79 stepside(unknown if anything special)and have been trying to find a True Spirit someone told me about after buying my '77 Warlock ($300).The bad thing around here (maybe everywhere) is that these trucks after the drivetrain dies are seen only as scrap metal and while no one would think of hacking a Red Express, the lesser known trucks(especially if original paint/decals are gone)aren't quite so lucky.I would like to be able to recognize which ones around here in the yards need to be saved or at least put the word out so they have a chance. .....A.l.

Anyone ever hear of an edition called the RAMROD? A long time ago, 8 plus years or so i was walking through a local junk yard and came across a mid-late 70's dodge 1/2 ton p/u. It had "Macho" like stripes and a nice interior, seat was similar to the Lil Red's, tough wheel, wood grain dash. Cant remember the year or what the grill looked like.. Distant memory i wish I'd have taken pictures of it. I did take the RAMROD nameplate off and stuck in in my tool box. I still have it somewhere..
Its comming back to me a little.. I think i t was a late 79.

Dynotune-The Palomino I found is a long bed/2WD/ 727/small block(I assumed a 318).Stripes are faded and truck overall is kinda rough.Cab drip edge would have to be replaced, tailgate missing along with 2 wheels ,If this was a normal truck I would consider it a decent parts donor but a Palomino is worth fixing regardless of condition due to rarity.I have tried to buy truck a few times with no luck so far (JY doesn't want to move other vehicles to get it out)I asked them if I would have to buy it piece by piece then put it back together at home If interested I will put you in contact with JY,just don't ask about their Palomino, they dont know one from the next...like the other JY that had the Dude II,I told him that would kinda be like the "Superbird" of trucks and not to crush it but I usually dont have the $ to take them home so...Digital cam is dead right now but will try to get pics.for you. Thanks A.l

Backtracking through Palomino post again-Question in regards to wheels and this may apply to all '79 model trucks. The 5 slot chrome(Red Express style) wheels remain the same but with different centercaps.'78 mopar wheel centercaps push through from the back like the wagon wheels, did the '79 style have 3 small holes in them for bolts to attach the centers or are these FORD wheels? I have both styles, only seeing numbers on back. Will update with pics..

it was cheap enough, the killer for me was the shipping. I think it was like 750 or so money wise. Talked to John several times over the phone, super nice and HONEST about the truck. I too thought it was worth it, and is early production PALOMINO, feb 1 1979.

Sorry, must have missed question on T.O.N. #,most numbers were faded pretty bad I think on that truck, will go back sometime and try to get them for you. Now what exactly is a T.O.N. anyway? Do you have any guestimates on how many Palomino were produced? Only in Feb.of '79? Was headlights optional configuration 2 or 4? All Adventurer/SE, Prospector pkgs?

Paint chips for '76-'77 Sable brown not included here, part of the "999" special order paint codes? I believe the colors here include large truck/RV paints not normally available on light duty trucks.

All Adventurer/SE, Prospector pkgs?
rough guess is a few thousand, and less than the Lil Red. They were made between feb of 79 thru july of 79. head lights.....quad lights were standard on Adventurer SE trucks and Lil Red's in 79, and optional on all other trim levels of dodge trucks.

Nothing to add at the moment but.... *** Can anyone post a V.I.N. decoder ? *** How about a core tag decoder? *** Does such a thing exist and would we be sued by Galen if we posted one.Technically G.G. didn't invent the information in those books just collected and marketed it,DON'T GET ME WRONG,he has put together some awesome info that otherwise may have been lost but can it be reprinted? Can you patent a dictionary that you didn't write?

all of the information that I had compiled led me to the earliest know truck being built on feb 1 of 1979. this last july I saw a beyond rusty palomino with a late jan build. It was the first one that I had ever seen that was built before feb. I am probably one of the very few that has multiples of the palomino, and has collected info on them. the prospector broshure is the only one that shows the package in it, and it is dated 3/79. Now your truck pops up. It blows my theory out of the water....yours may have been pre-production, who knows...chrysler doesn't have any info... Maybe I shouldn't have posted the info...dunno...

Spirit Of 76 Fargo? Yes the hood and tailgate both say Fargo!

VERY cool, but makes NO SENSE!! Weren't the Fargo trucks only sold in Canada (or, at least, outside the USA)? So, why would Canadians want to celebrate American Independence?
