I have a 65 Coronet 225. The first time I connected the battery this year, the fused wire between the starter relay and the bulkhead fuseblock burned. I replaced the starter relay and the wire-the same thing happened again. Could it be the solenoid on the starter? If not, what should I check? The battery is at full charge.

What might be the problem?

Give me a minute as I type slow. One possibility is you installed the battery backwards (sounds silly but people do it).

Another is the alternator.

Negative post to the starter?

you have a dead short somewhere or your fusible link is not rated for enough amps.

Start by pulling all the fuses, disconnect the large cable off the alt and insulat it so it doesn't touch anything.

Then put the fuses back one at a time till it pops again. see what circuit it is and figure out where your short is.

IF it still blows instantly, then unplug the headlight switch and horns.
Not sure what else always has power, but start looking at your wiring inside and the bulkhead connector for a short.
Might even bypass the amp meter just incase.

Sounds like a high amperage fault (short circuit) . . . . might want to check the ammeter connections - the one on the dash . . . could be they may have worked loose and are touching ground ???

As was mentioned before, possibly the alternator as well . . .
