If I get suck in traffic the temprature starts to climb and stays high until I get moving again. I have a big old super cooler mounted to the front of the radiator and was wondering how much this might improve if I move it from in front of the radiator.

Has anyone else had a similar situation?

Ken

I have a trans cooler in front of my radiator on my 70 road runner and am having the same issue you are.

So i am curious for the answer to this also....at the very least the post is bumped back to the top.

What is the rest of you cooling components and engine size? How much horsepower and torque converter stall speed. You may not have the correct components to keep this thing cool. What size radiator, fan, shroud, thermostat? My cooler is located in front of my radiator and cooling is not an issue.185-190 max temps in Fl. 493 3500 stall converter.

You don't want to move the trans coolers, it needs to be up front for the transmissions sake. I have had the same high engine temp problem with my 360 B'cuda. I have a 904 with a 9.5" Dynamic converter (more heat). I have made 2 changes this month that have cooled things down considerably. First, I found a deep trans pan on Egag that has an extra quart capacity AND cooling tubes that run through the pan, front to back. Literature that came with the pan says it reduces trans temp 20 to 50 degrees. So you are getting rid of some trans heat at the source before it ever gets to the radiator and coolers out front. Second, I changed from 20w50 diesel motor oil to 10w30 Pennzoil and added a bottle of ZDDPlus additive. Oil pressure is still good, and the thinner oil and lower pressure dropped the engine temps further. I had it out for a run last weekend in 90*+ weather, and it did not go past 2/3 to H. Now to fix my fuel delivery problems

EDIT. Also, when sitting in traffic, shift to neutral. The idle will pick up slightly, and the engine will stop lugging against the converter/trans. Both should help cooling at least a little.

I have the same problem as the first 2 posters, and a BIG trans cooler right in front of my radiator, behind the grill, which is where I reckon the radiator gets most of the air from since there's a giant bumper blocking the lower part.

There are some guys (Goody if I remember right) who are using the stacked plate style cooler and located it in their wheel well where it gets airflow, but is not in front of the radiator.

I am in the middle of installing a clutch fan in my car, and a shroud. If after that I still have cooling problems I'm going to get a smaller trans cooler and put it in the wheelwell. I dunno about the other guys but I already have a deep trans pan..

Its good to have a few inches of airgap between the two.

I think the problem on a car, is where do you move it to?

I think I've seen some of the southern guys say they have moved thiers with sucess. Perhaps one of them will chime in.

I mounted a remote trans cooler on my tow rig winni.

I used a trans cooler from a 06 f350 superduty diesel. It's about the same size as a K car radiator. That said, I mounted an electric fan on it from a K car. I moved it so it is behind the rear diff, under the motor home.

It's not rocket science. If the cooler is in front of the rad, it takes the heat out of the trans, and puts it straight back into the rad. By moving the cooler, so it is totally independant, it only removes heat from the trans. Does not ad it to the motor. Preheated air for the radiator can't be effecient, as seen when the AC is on.

How good does it work? Well, I only kick the fan on, when on the hills to help keep the trans from boiling(common in motor homes). Keeps my engine temps constant when pulling the car.
When I got to a 50 mile flat stretch after a bunch of hill climbing last year, I kicked it on just for fun. Dropped the engine temp 10 degrees.

I'm pretty sure there are small coolers with electric fans already built on them available from speed shops, online etc..

in neutral the pump doesn't flow enough, you are better off in gear with the pump at max psi.

I'm running a stock radiator (read old) right now with a new shrowd and clutch fan on a 505 with a 3800 stall converter, I ordered a new radiator and I'll see where that gets me befor I move the cooler

Is your radiator a 22" or 26"? (not sure if 22" even came in GTX's....) I have been looking for a new radiator for my roadrunner also, do you mind me asking which one you went with? Aluminum?

Sock is 26", I bought an aluminum 26" off of ebay but now after talking to Don at FBO I may be returning it, he is recurving a distributer for me and said that it will more than likely take care of my heat issues. We'll see

this is a very good idea but the biggest heat source is the torque convertor and it pumps fluid to the cooler before it gets back to the pan .

old rad , let me guess , 2 row ?

i think what ever don is doing is not going to be the cure all , a 505 inch motor needs a good cooling system. A better rad , a shroud , a good fan and a hi flow pump is going to be required also.

Yeah, two row. I am running a shroud, good fan and hi flow pump. I'm not banking on the distributer to be the cure all but I will change it first and see what impact that has before I do anything else.

I have seen two many guys make tons of changes all at once and end up with little or nothing corected. I'll make changes one at a time.

I'll let you know

Okay, sounds like my thinking was bass ackwards. Not the first time (or last) . But still, any heat shed beneath the car is heat you are getting out of the cooling system eventually.
