Is it possible to build a numbers matching car, if all you had was the paperwork and fender tag from it? I was wondering this the other day, and I just found a complete documentation package listed in the A-body parts section for a 71 Duster Twister. All the proper stuff is there (It's the 13th one from the bottom of the page!) So for instance, Could I use all his stuff, and make my regular 71 Duster a Duster Twister??? Now I know the engine, tranny, and #'s stamped on the various parts of the body would'nt match, and you could'nt take it to Barrett Jackson or anything, but it would be pretty official looking at a show right?

while you could do this, and many have and will continue to do so, it is illegal, unethical, etc. At least that seems to be the consensus. Interesting question for sure...

Swapping VINs is illegal. Fender tags are ok.

the duster twister is nothing more than an OPTION package , 95% of people wouldn't even know what the option code for it was when looking at the fendertag .

but why do you need to FAKE documentation for your car ? make it what you want , it's not like its a hemi car , not many people going to oh and ah over a 318 duster with stripes and hood scoops so whats the point ?

I don't NEED to fake anything. I AM gonna build the car the way I want it anyhow. I was just wondering, IF, hypothetically, it could be done. As a matter of fact, the fender tag on my car is rusted away to nothing, so I pulled one off of a Challenger in the junkyard to put on it just to fill the space on the fender .......Who cares, right?

The title doesn't matter. SWAPPING VINs FROM ONE CAR TO ANOTHER IS ILLEGAL PERIOD. BTW the ad has been removed from this site because of that. Who cares? The next poor chump that buys the car thinking it's legal and real. That's who.

"Is it possible to build a numbers matching car, if all you had was the paperwork and fender tag from it?"

It is possible to screw the fender tag to your car. It is also possible to get a VIN plate made to rivot to your dash. But the whole context of numbers matching would be engine and trans as well. It is also possible to track down the engine and trans to the new VIN. It is even possible that some one kept the body number to graff onto another core support/body. So in theory it is possible to build a numbers matching car from the info provided on the fender tag. It is called a rebody and it really shouldn't happen, but I'm no the police, just opinionated. A rebody is worse thatn a clone in that with a rebody someone might get duped one day.

Careful, your character's showing!

You asked I answered. Most of us don't keep a car forever and whos to say the next guy to buy it may try to flip it as real. BTW you are the one asking about creatiing a FAKE car. The ONLY reason for changing all the tags is to fool people or else why do it.

That's not true. What if the car you bought had no paperwork at all, but was in pretty decent shape to be fixed up? I've seen lots of cars listed as "parts only" coming out of the southwest, and they are in much better shape than the cars in the northeast, and there is no fender tag, build sheet, or title.

Then you get a legal builders title. What don't you understand about swapping VINs being against the law. No exceptions.

I saw that ad and shook my head...Also the 69 Daytona on ebay, I would not be surprised if the buyer goes there, takes the tags, engine and trans and leaves the rest (maybe a few #'s off the car from certain places).

I think the point of the license would be to repair a written off car NOT illegally change the vin's Ya dig?

I am pretty sure there is even some law about changing your legal vin to a good dash pad for your legal car no?

If you want a Twister...twist it! I made a point of doing things to my truck that everyone knows is not right for a Warlock, just so I could say SO WHAT, I LIKE IT!!

So I guess a Reconstructed title would be the most obvious answer, yes?
And by the way, I AM NOT DOING THIS!! I was just posing a theoretical question for discussion, thats all

I understand you when you say you are not doing it, and I think all everyone is saying is that it is unethical and illegal.

In that, people are doing it all the time, and unfortunately there are people buying those cars and getting hosed.

The long term problem even with some honest people doing it is that sooner or later the car will be sold. If I rebodied a Hemicuda to a regular Barracuda, died 20 years later and my nephew was in charge of selling my stuff, he just might advertise my hemicuda as serial# BS... (hehe) not knowing any better...and on down the line.

In my eyes it is just WAY better to steer clear of such things to save any hassle at all.

Hey, I agree. I know a guy who "makes" SS Chevelles with grille emblems, and junkyard VINs just so he can sell them for big money!
