When parking on a hill which gear would be best to leave the trans in, 1st or 4th? I say 4th, friend says 1st...for some reason in my head im thinking 4th will be harder to turn the engine over...but its been a looooong week!

1st or reverse depending on the hill, AND the parking brake.

1st or reverse, which ever one is numerically higher. Say first gear is 4:1, so one turn of the driveshaft is 4 turns of the engine. In fourth gear of say .75:1, 1 turn of the driveshaft is only .75 turns of the engine. Now which is easier, turning the engine 4 times or .75 times.

last time i checked though, say you were push starting the engine..using the starter. You'd sure move a lot better/easier in first than you would 4th. What about an overdrive application? even 'easier' to turn the engine? 1st being a big gear turning a little gear would be easier to turn thanks to the torque of that setup. Say a 5th gear where a little gear would have to turn a larger gear, it'd take more to actually do that..just how it is in my head

Think it has something to do with torque multiplication. assuming a 3 to 1 1st gear and a 1 to 1 first gear with the engine driving the input shaft the rear sees a 3 to 1 torque multiplication but with the rear wheels driving the input shaft it there would be a 1/3 torque multiplication divide by 3) When in 4th gear (1:1) and the input shaft has the same torque (i.e. more likely to turn the engine over). When driving, downshifting offers braking.

I think

or easier to slip the clutch. My old man would never leave the '53 or '57 Plymouths in gear when parked; said if someone bumped you, could chip a gear. Of course not too many steep hills in Fresno, and old MOPARS had a POWERFUL parking brake on the driveshaft.

This is actually a great question. I think there is more to it than the gear ratio--like the point at which the clutch will just slip and NOT require the engine to turn. I always put my car in SECOND gear, but I will admit I never really thought real hard about it.

Use 1st or reverse if parking on a hill.Think about push starting a car with manual trans, you use 3rd or 4th because it's easier to turn the motor,if you use 1st the motor will stop the car or be extremely hard to push.Thats what you want when parked on a hill, extremely hard to push and yes its due to the gear ratio.

I use first or reverse in my car with the parking brake. When I am done with the car totally as stock, my key only comes out when it is in reverse from the factory

I don't think it matters which gear because there should be two preceding factors which should keep your car from even moving when parked on a hill:

1) Turning you front tire at an angle so it's touching the curb

2) Setting the parking brake
