I'm putting together my 440 and have the valve train assembled and when turning the motor over by hand I noticed that some of the lifters turn when the cam lobe comes around and some dont. should they?? I know they need to spin when the engine running so I am a little concerned...maybe they will spin when it's running??am I worring about nothin?? by the way, it's a new cam and lifters. thanks.

They could be skidding on the moly, but why risk it? I have always marked the lifters with a Sharpie, and turn the crank 10 full rotations. If I don't see atleast a 1/4 rotation I'll switch a few around till I see the rotation. Then re-moly the face of the lifter once I'm satisfied.

You want them to turn. The lifter face is not exactly flat just for that reason. This allows for cam break-in without the cam and lifters self destructing.

I wouldn't worry about it just turning the motor over by hand. I do hear a lot about running a diesel grade of oil for cam break in though. Like shell rotella. Supposedly the oil has a lot of zinc in it. I guess it lubricates and also aids in providing friction for break in(lifters turning etc.) I'm pretty sure you can get info from comp cams website.

The flat tappet cam face is not flat either for the same reason.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

you should see them all rotate , if not move them around .

what cam are you using ?

the cam is an old crane "Blazer 288" vintage 1981. I got it new in the box from a friend of mine for free. the lifters are new 'perfect circle' units...I gooped everything up with GM EOS lube and then dumped a bottle of the red, Comp cam lube on everything for good measure.

I'll pull the rockers and pushrods and swap holes with the lifters and check for any tight ones and try again. thanks for the help, guys!

light oil is all that should be on the sides of the lifter and the bores that they ride in. Not the sticky lifter to cam lube.
