my car started slowing down, and i cant figure out why but i have a idea its the motor. it made 5 passes at 11.40-11.42, next time out 11.67, 11.82, 11.97, 12.09, 12.16. i checked the brakes, fuel pressure and volume, the converter has been pulled and checked with no problems, am i missing something or is this thing about to blow.

its a 440, basically stock with a small hydro cam, 727 trans. if anybody can give me ANY ideas it would be very helpful. T

Pull the valve covers and check the valve lift...
hyd cams have their problems..... just a guess

Check the visual amount of air/smoke coming out of the valve cover breathers. With a cracked piston or broken ring it will be a noticible event.

It could be other things as well! One thing for sure is untill I found out, I wouldnt be taking that thing down the track at ALL.

Start with a compression check on all cylinders. Also, dont feel the problem could be with the engine alone. It could be numerous things.

Just had this happen the other week to my car.

Brakes were hanging up. Years ago I also had a rear end that would slow up each pass as the heat built up in it.

Just a few things to rule out while your looking over things.

What cam you running.My car did this because a lob on cam went flat

i checked the brakes and they were not hanging up, i even checked the hot in case it was something with the master cylinder. wouldnt a wiped lobe on the cam make some kinda noise like a bad lifter?

i forgot to mention, this motor has less than 10 passes, when this first start the car died out coming out of the burnout box, and wouldnt restart, towed back to the pits and it started without any problems found, the next passes are when it started slowing down. also the car is hard to start at operating temp, it doesn't want to spin over like it should.

Could be lots of things.

After checking the basics (trans fluid level, oil level, etc). I would pull the valve covers and look for a loose rocker arm (turn the motor over by hand).

A compression check is worthwhile, but I fear a bearing is going away. You should see metal in the heads and oil if that is the case.
