Hi all, I have a question regarding emissions at smog check while running a add-in fuel system cleaner.
My problem is a recent CA smog test failure. California has the two stage test as most know, and emissions were a little over on the low speed test, in hydrocarbons. 25 mph was fine. Problem is an intermittent miss. Why the test was underway I could hear a little miss every now and then. Tech was going re-test, but decided to have me clear up the miss problem first. I have no idea why it decided to start the miss, truck runs great. I previous did a pretty complete tune-up. Isolating the miss is next to impossible; random rpm or none. So fixing that is not really an option (it's very very minor and usually non-existant).

The question: If I run a bottle of Valvoline Complete Fuel System cleaner in the gas during the next test, will the cleaner increase the normal emissions? I ran some a few weeks prior to the test and the truck ran flawless with the cleaner in it.
What do these chemical treatments do as far as extra pollutants?
Any smog techs have any thoughts on this?

Intermittant miss is going to be hard to 'mask' by a cleaner. Dumps straight HC's out the tailpipe on that miss. What year vehicle? We talkin a 1970s ford pickup, or a 2005 ford pickup?

Thanks for the reply Goody. Miss is without cleaner, and again very random difficult to replicate, let alone diagnosis. I agree the miss dumps HC right out the tailpipe.
Vehicle is a 1991 F-150 4.9L (EFI). I know solving the REAL issue with the miss is the right thing to do, but I'd basically have to right a blank check to a repair shop to find the random miss. Not going to do that, I think it is the pick-up coil in the dizzy.

Ford electronics are (explicitive)

BUT, just wondering what these fuel system cleaners add too emisssions?? I guess, what the heck is in this stuff?

ya, ya, whatever

it is a ford but I need it for a few more months

I think I'll just go re-test tomorrow morning and see what happens

Still would like to know what those fuel system cleaners add if/any to tailpipe emissions?

Considering all the costs involved
if it were mine
I would install new OEM spec sparkplugs
and set the gap relatively small
like 0.025 inch
as one simple way to minimize the miss.

While changing the sparkplugs
as a minimum
I would use the ohms range of an electrical multimeter to check each ignition wire, then divide the Ohms reading by the length in feet of the particular ignition wire and be very suspicious of any ignition wire that had a high or low value for Ohms per foot of wire.

To find a random miss
you really need a meter like this one:

http://www.etoolcart.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=5073

but if on a budget
it is at least possible to use a
inductive clip on timing light
and move the inductive clip from wire to wire
watching the 'steadiness' of the flash rythmn
to find the cylinder with the miss

Low compression in one cylinder
due to a bent valve/leaking head gasket
is a common cause of miss-fire
when everything in the ignition system
checks out normal

Good luck
