How do you tell the difference between a pre 70 torqueflite and a 70 and up torqueflite. The reason i ask is i need to buy a rebuild kit for my trans and not sure what it is.
Thanks for any and all info

I know very little about transmissions, but I'll take a stab until someone else answers. I believe the 69 and earlier ones had fewer, but bigger splines on the input shaft, therefore using a different torque converter. I don't remember how many. I'm not much help.

The input spline diff is from the 66 to 67.

HOW you tell the diff in the 70's ... is the valve-body.

Early models have a narrow front pump bushing. 1970 up have a wide front pump bushing. As you open it up the pump is the first thing out, just take a look at it first. Hope this helps.

Look at the pump. Metal plate covering vent at the top. 70 and back. No plate over the vent? 71 and up. Unless it's been into before?

Post the number on the pan rail after the "PK", or look in the tech archives.

I think everyone covered it?
The input spline count change over was between the '66 anf '67 model year.
The 70 and earlier transmissions used a front pump with just a metal shield covering the vent. The later pump has a plastic baffel. The stator support (bolts to back of pump, and fit into the front drum) is different because the front clutch drum used a wider bushing from '71 and up.
The front servo is slightly different. The early servo uses a smaller diameter pushrod, and the later servo uses a load controlled / larger diameter pushrod. The rear diaphram spring is different, The later valve bodies usually have the part throttle kick down assembly. I don't know the year when they changed the governor design that has the small cone filter in it?

I'm sure there are a few other changes, but I doubt it would affect the rebuild kit selection.

I think all the aftermarket front drums require the use of the newer style stator support (That is normally on the newer style pump.)

At least it is not a pre '66 model with the rear pump and cable shift / park setup

From John Kunkel's photo site:

Pre-'71 case has center pipe plug low near the pan rail.

3515845 is from a 71 Plymouth, Dodge or Chrysler with a 383 2BBL. But that is just the case marking. If it has been rebuilt at any time, no telling what has been changed inside.
