I finally installed the Magnaflows, if anything was going to cure the drone I thought they would do it as they are packed tight with insulation and the exhaust does not actually bounce around inside the empty body of the mufflers....

While it is definitely better the drone is still there, not nearly as bad but.... I give up.... almost!

If I can't get used to it I guess a stock type system is next, either that or try Flowmasters, but how many mufflers do I try...

I hope somebody out there can help....

70 Challenger drop top, healthy 440, 3.55 gears.

1st - Headers and 3" exhaust with Dynomax Super Turbos and X pipe, very loud, pulsing drone/noise and did not like the sound of the X, had trouble with the ceramic coating on the headers twice and decided to ditch the whole system.

2nd - Manifolds and 2 1/2" pipe with crossover, cheap Thrush Turbos, very bad drone.

3rd - changed mufflers to Dynomax Super turbos, no change.

4th - Added 4" dia resonators before the tips, outside sound changed but no reduction in the drone.

5th - Plugged the crossover, slight reduction, the car is still quite loud (vibrates and shakes overhead covers in gas stations) but not bad when driving except at 40 to 45 MPH of course, AHHHHHHH.

Anybody have this type of thing happen to them? Any ideas or suggestions? I am thinking of changing to a quiet type of muffler, any good quieter performance mufflers available?

Cheerio, Rob

where does the exhaust exit? at the rear end, end of the car, etc?

I had a 2 1/2" TTI system with stock manifolds on my 440 Cuda...bad drone, especially at cruise 45-55 mph. I put on TTI 1 7/8" headers no other changes and drone went away. Overall car is probably a little louder with headers, but that annoying drone is gone and I can now cruise in comfort and listen to music if I want to.

I didn't want to hear that! I have had it with headers though, 8 hours to re and re twice, had ceramic coating fail both times and gave up....

How bad was your drone? It is really bad with my car, it is almost like pressure in my head, hard to describe but... very intense...

My DynoMax super turbos had a slight drone around 40 mph. I put some Ultra Flows on the car and they have no drone. Plus, they sound so much better than the turbos.

On both sides of the floor there is primer, rock guard, (basically undercoating), then paint....

Hmmmm, how do they sound? I don't really want my car to sound like a 5 litre Mustang... But if there is no drone....

How about posting a few pictures of the exhaust
including a good shot of the exhaust hangers? Maybe the pictures will be worth a thousand words for a possible cure. A few things to think about regarding e-body applications. There is not enough room for the proper size mufflers under the rear seat where the original short resonators were installed. Short 14" case mufflers are not going to abate interior resonation. There was a reason why the Chrysler engineers placed the large round mufflers in the rear next to the fuel tank and the resonators under the rear seat.
Engine and transmission mounts not made of the proper insulating rubber can also add to the existing resonation problem as well. Just a few thoughts.

Sorry, don't have any undercar photos, the hangers are stock in back with rubber insulated ones holding up the 16" body mufflers. What is perplexing me is that I have installed the same exhaust in the same cars with no drone, why this one, I just don't know....

I am going to try some quieter mufflers and if THAT doesn't work I might have to go the stock type route.

Same thing with my 71 'cuda. Healthy 440 with 3" TTI and stock manifolds = bad drone around 45mph. Went with the 1 7/8" headers and the drone is gone. Much more power and sounds 10 times better.

Ultra Flows definitely do not sound like a Mustang. I wouldn't have them if they did.
They are fairly quiet at part throttle cruising and really sound good at WOT.
I'll post a sound clip when I get home this evening.
