Ok,

I made the recent budget build 360 (425 hp) thread not to long ago. Well I was able to find a 2001 Magnum motor that was only $200 dollars. Once we took it apart we noticed that the heads were cracked . I did some searching on e-bag and come across a company that rebuids Magnum heads and has been in business for 30+ years. Here is there link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...565164&rd=1

The price is $175 per head and they accept cracked heads as cores! I have a few questions would these be adequate heads for a low buck, but fun street stroker in an A-body? When the money is right I will either buy some EQ heads or Eddies, but will these hold me over till then?

The block has to be bored .030 over and I'm planning on going with the Scat Stroker kit.

I'm leaning towards a single plan Edelbrock intake with a 750 3310 Holley carb.

As far as the camshaft goes, that's where I'm totally clueless. I'm sure I'll be using Comp. I don't really mind an aggressive cam so some suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My ultimate goal would be in the 425hp range and 450+ tq. If it makes more, then even better.

Instead of going through my engine shop I'm going to come up with a parts list and source them all on my own to save the extra cash.

I'm sure some of my information that I supplied is very vague, but when it comes to engines, I know absolutely nothing.

I want to be able to run in the mid 12's for sure in a 3300 pound A-body that has 4.10 gears.

So if anyone can shed some light on terrible questions (best I can do ). I will jump through hoops and cut back flips!

Thanks again Moparts!

Regards,
Charles

Take a look at the specs of MP's 402/408 stroker crate motor. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail...mp;autoview=sku

These engines are awesome. My grandfather has one in his Demon. It runs on 87 octane and has pushed the car to a best of 12.10. I think a build up similar to the 402 (cam, heads, stroke, and intake wise) with 10:1 compression would be great and yield high 11's easily.

well, you're going to need to do some port clean up on stock magnums to hit 425+ HP, nothing major, Dulcich had an article in an '05 mopar muscle with some minor bowl, valve job, and port pinch work that added ~25CFM to flow on some maggies, which would yield them to support 450-460hp.

one thing to remember with the reman heads--you'll still need to buy new springs/retainers for any type of performance cam, so that'll add more cost, whereas CME engines sells new enginequest heads w/ chevy +.1" long valves, 5 angle valve job, and springs that'll handle a hydraulic roller up to ~.550" lift for under $900/pr. if you're into some reman heads for $350, and have to spend another $200-300 for springs & retainers (hard to find a low cost spring/retainer solution for mag heads, unless you can find a few 2.2L/2.5L mopars in junkyards to yoink the retainers off of), it might be better just to go new/chev 11/32" stem valves.

what kind of R's do you want to turn? maggies have a small cross section, and they'll make their best power on a 408 on the idle-5500 RPM range, so I'd cam accordingly (probably a roller cam similar to the crate motor cam, but with a little wider LSA, personally). you might want to save the $$ and just use some 0 deck KB107's and the stock stroke.

Yeh I figured those reman heads would def. need some work and the additional parts needed, it might be better to just go with the EQ heads. Where is the cheapest place to buy them? And do they require cores? If not I've got two boat anchors.

Doubt you would need 4:10 gears. 3:55's or maybe 3:91's would be fine. These motors make an abundance of torque so using a streetable gearset like a 3:55 still works good.

Yep, I got the specs for a real world 425 hp 360 with a comp mag 280 (id have to look) hydro cam, simple bowl work j heads, single plain, 750 avenger. 1 5/8 headers.

Strokers love duration, the biggest mistake ive been seeing make is people not keeping there dynamic comp in line with there cam. Same cam in a 360 wont cut it in a stroker.

540 solid in same motor made a bit more hp but 10 pounds less peak torque then the hydro.

If your doing a simple stroker 525 is an easy figure to shoot for with a bit better heads.

But as mentioned some zero decks and a good stock crank and rods balanced and your in...

I am guessing you called Best machine? Chuck just build a 408 for a friend of mine in Europe, it was just a junk yard 360, plain jane mid 70's 915 J heads with mild port work and a good valve job, HYD. Cam, pump gas compression, and had a customer supplied intake (EB Performer which certainly choked it real well) but all else was just a basic 360 stroker build. He just dynoed it and it came in at 435 HP/465LB Torque. Not bad for an off the shelf-no trick parts or machine work build. If it were me I'd have him start from scratch and build you an all new long block and toss your other engine under the work bench for someday.

I didn't ask, give Chuck a call and he can give you a quote. I've found his work to be reasonable/competitive.

A budget stroker smallblock would probably start in the $4,500ish zone if you were to assemble it yourself.

The price is really nice on the 408 Blue Print Engines and the warranty is a very nice addtion. I've just heard mixed reviews regarding these engines. Basically all I'd need to do is buy a carb, some headers and call it a day. $4200 doesn't sound so bad.

I wish I just knew more about the company and this particular motor before dropping that kind of scratch.

If there are a few owners or people that know someone who has one on the site that has a substantial amount of information on these engines could you guys/gals chime in? For instance do they only come in black? I'd def. like to have mine orange.

Luckily if I do happen to go this route I only spent a little over $200 for the Magnum motor. Everything on the motor besides the heads are good to go. Is there a market on any of these parts (Crank, bare block etc) so I can at least recoupe my money?

Gosh I love this hobby, but when it comes to certain things I crawfish (means change my mind in cajun country) on what I'm going to do. I'm just a college student with limited funds, trying to build a very nice engine without having to visit the plasma facility weekly.

Was yours the 408 stroker? And if so, are you pleased with it? Did you get the base engine or the turnkey engine? All info will be helpful.

Thanks

i have the 408 base, I very pleased with the einge about 3500 miles on it now.

2 problems i had with it was they didn't index the intermediate shaft correctly but no big deal.

Then the dipstick hit the crank but that might of been my fault b/c i removed the tub and stick and bent it a little when i reinstalled it.

For the money imo you get get alot better parts then the turn key offers.

If I may ask, what did the engine cost and was there a core charge? What did you install the engine in? Thanks

I have the turn key or dressed model. Installed in 68 barracuda fastback, auto, The warranty was what made me lean towards it. With all the wiped cam lobes out there I liked that they run it for 20 min. on a dyno before they ship it. I'm pretty sure you could build one cheaper, but I'm happy with mine. $7700.00 delivered no core charge, Mine put out more than the advertised hp/tq figures.
