My friend has a 96 dakota. The oil pressure light comes on and the oil pressure needle drops. If he turns the engine off then on again it operates as normal.Would this be a problem with the oil pump or gauges? This occurs a few times a week.Thanks.

Could be a plugged pickup screen, or if you're lucky a bad sender. You may want to put a test gauge on there to see if it really loses pressure.

The gauge in my 2000 R/T does the same thing. It never drops low enough to turn the light on though. It's been doing it for 70,000 miles, so I have just accepted the gauge is wacky.

I guess if he wants to be sure he can plumb in a mechanical gauge and watch for awhile.
