I read the few posts on Helmets here, didn't find the answer I need... so here's the issue.

I raced the Challenger this weekend, and I hit 14.3 in the 1/4 mile. Ok, cool. Now I need a helmet.

I tried on the XXL one they had there, and my head is much to big for the thing. I can't find anything on Simpson's site or Helmetcity.com about anything larger.

Any ideas?

Ryan

Ok... perhaps I should rephrase instead of trying to be funny....

My big melon of a head won't fit into a XXL racing helmet.

And 14.3 is average for a stone stock one with no modifications, and I didn't even mess with the air pressure in the tires. Still beat a new Camaro SS.

Maybe the helmet wasn't XXL (as in mismarked or mislabeled). Get to a shop and try on NEW helmets from several companies, all XXL, to be certain of no fit.

And then shave your hair off and go Van Gogh on the ears.

If I found a helmet for my macro encephalitic gourd , then you can too.
If not , then maybe you should consider work as a parade float or inflatable for Macy's Thanksgiving day parade.
Best advice here is to go out and try some on though.............they are not all created equal.
I have an old Bell open face that is snug and an I forget who's closed face that fits live a glove.
O.K. , a one fingered glove .......... but it fits.

Ok, now you have me curious... how freakishly large is your head? See sizing chart below. The G-Force Outlet usually has XXL and XXS helmets on sale.

Thanks guys, I'll go hit up the local speed shop see if they have any I can try on.

I'll get an exact measurement of my overly large gourd when I'm there and report back.

Dang. POST A PICTURE I have to see how big that basketball head of yours is

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

The correct way to measure for a helmet is to use a cloth tape measure, the kind seamstresses use. It should wrap around your head just above the eyebrows and rest behind the tops of your ear lobes next to you skull. Get a measurement there and use that to determine which manufacturers' sizes fall within that measurement range..

You gotta try them. Mine is narrow, but long. Almost every helmet is too tight at the forehead and loose above the ears. Even the same manufacturer will fit different in various styles...

I'll get a measuring tape and get a rough idea tonight. I asked the lady at Great Lakes if they had any for big bear or moose.... she wasn't laughing.

Sadly my head was that big before and will be that big later. Plus my ego has had enough bruising lately that it let alot of the hot air out.

My hat size, helmet also is 7 5/8 not XXL. Not all helmet and hat sizes in the XL and XXL are the same. My current helmet is a Bell open face, I wear glasses and my class does not require a close face helmet, try different brands and sizes on, you do not want a lose helmet on your head in a crash Buy one that is snug and will become very snug once you fasten the chin strap I have to pull the sides open on mine to be able to slide it on to start with

Great thread Ryan! Thanks for the laughs. 13.99 before you need a helmet. Just curious - what are you paying for hair cuts???

Damn, the chick said 14.99. My friends heard it too because they mocked me not finding a helmet for just going 14.99

I tried the lube... just goes everywhere.

$5.00... that colick I have up front is completely natural.

Going today, there's a large cycle place by my home that should fit the bill.

I wonder if they have helmets in sizes from big bear to moose.

Just do what I do. I tell them I have a metal plate in my head.... and if they try to test it with a magnet, I stop them and tell them I'll pee in my pants and forget who I am for a half hour, and that they would be liable.....

x2 make sure the helmet has the snell rating, some just have a DOT and no snell rating, they will check this at GLD DAMHIK. I bought a 3XL at sportland a crotch rocket shop in oak creek for $100 new with the snell rating. I remember when 12.99 and quicker you needed a helmet, now its 14.99? WOW

The girl at the gate said 14.99, I made sure my friend heard it too. I see on their website it is 13.99. So just to be safe I'll get one. I wanna get into the 13's anyhow.

Every track I've seen for the helmet cutoff is 13.99, except Atco which I was told requires them regardless of ET.

You'll only want to go faster, so of course you should get one.

And don't skimp on it, how much is your head worth?

Remember too that helmets come in 2 different shapes, round and oval. It makes a big difference in how they fit.

I was down at my buddy's bike shop when a lady brought in her 15 year old son to get a dirt bike helmet. Chuck gave him the biggest one he had and it would not fit. We nicknamed the kid 'Punkinhead'.

Wanna run my Goat heads-up sometime? It's a 5.7 too. Should be a good race.

I went today to Chicago Cycle... they had 1 helmet that fit me. A Zook (sp?) XXXXXL... I am NOT kidding. It was DOT rated but not Snell rated. So I gotta keep on looking.

I am going drag racing Sunday at Union Grove. Bring it out, free racing, just the spectator fee of $12

Ryan,

E-Mail Kasey at sales@promaxcarbs.com with your head size in inches. They are direct with Simpson and can find a good helmet to fit ya, at a "Moparts" discount.

I told him to look for you to get in touch with him.

Scott

Someone said I should just put a bucket over my head and drill some holes for eyes in it.... I didn't think it was a good idea.

I'll email Kasey and get him the information. Just gotta measure my head.

Thanks

Someone said I should just put a bucket over my head and drill some holes for eyes in it.... I didn't think it was a good idea.

Thanks

Ryan

That's just plain mean. Everybody knows that you drill the holes in the bucket BEFORE you put it on your head.

The DOT rated M hemets meet NHRA specs for cars slower than 9.99 ET, some of the M rated DOT helmets (I don't remember the spec code, sorry) also meet the code for faster than 9.99 Buy one tha fits well, snug, not loose

You went faster than that and they didn't toss you out. Congrats!

I saw a guy make a 12 second pass with no helmet and they didn't toss him either.

I have yet to decide on which style I want. I can get a Vega XXXXXL or a Simpson. Don't quite know. Don't need one for a while. So we shall see. Any suggestions of good ones?
