I'm building a 440 for a 69 charger. Firstly, no, I don't race. My car will be a cruiser, driven mostly for fun or to car shows/cruise-ins.

That said, I bought this engine used, and the person I bought it from did the heads for me (452 heads). He also ahd the machine work done. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) he sai dit was a 1974 engine. During the machining, there was a crack/bubble in one of the cylinders, so he gave me a different block, from a '72 as far as I know, and had the machine work done on it.

It's bored 40, has kb hypereutectic pistons. The cast crank is ground 10. I bought the sepcial flex plate to use the non weighted torque convertor. I have a 727-B torqueflite transmission.

I put a mopar performance aluminum water pump housing on, and plan on using a flex fan with a shroud. I used the stock, low-rise intake manifold, from my other 440.

This is the first engine of any kind I have ever built, so I've been going slow and trying to make sure everything is right.

When I went to put the harmonic balancer on, it won't go in far enough. It bottoms out against the timing sprocket with about a 1/2 inch to go. I checked online, but cannot find another balancer that looks like the one I have, which leads me to believe I have the wrong one, yikes!

Here are some pictures of the one I have. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

P.S.: Body work is way too expensive!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. It's doesn't match any of those photos, but from the last picture, I'd say the balancer I have is for a small block engine.

That sucks. Anyone know where can I buy the right one for less than a small fortune?

Thanks, moparmedic, I put in a bid on the one on e-bay. It only has a couple days left.

Moparlulu, if I don't win the auction, I might take the 400 one. I assume it's interchangeable with the 440 cast cracnk? (I'm still learning this stuff)

Thanks again for the info and help.

Looks like you have a 360 balancer. You need the one that says "440 cast crank only" on it. 400 balancer won't work right. I have a rebuilt one. PM me if your interested.

Your's is a 360 balancer, & the counterweight on a 400 unit is thinner than on a 440 piece.

Edit: I just went out & looked at a 400 balancer I have, & the whole thing is thinner than the 440 balancer.

heres something to ponder ...

i'm not 100% sure of this but isn't the balancer installed on the crank when balancing and external balance engine ? if this is the case and that balancer was used then you are going to throw the balance the engine off .

Yeah, I thought of that too. I'm going to ask the guy who balanced it if it was balanced with the the flex plate and the balancer, or jsut the flex plate. If he had the balancer on when it was balanced, I'll probably have to pull the crank back out and have it re-balanced.

What a pain in the butt! At least it's getting fixed before I fire it up.

EVEN THOUGH the 440 cast crank and 400 cast crank balancers are marked differently they have the SAME amount of imbalance. I firmly believe that they can be interchanged. You could look it up.
