Hey all,

Is there a good aftermarket shifter that will fit in a stock 68 B-Body console?

I'm not worried about a stock look, and I'm really tired of my sloppy stock shifter. This is for a driver - so I don't need a race shifter, just something that I install in the stock location that will work with the stock console plate.

Also - the stock shifter mounting plate seems to be welded to the floor hump. Would I have to remove this? I'd really like something that was a bolt-in option.

Thanks!

I saw recently where somebody is selling a flat Hurst looking shifter that fits the stock console. You can get it with a pistol grip, or use a knob or t handle of your choice. Pretty sure it has a ratchet or slapstick type mechanisim too, and according to them it's entirely a bolt in deal. If mine were an automatic I'd sure be looking at one. Don't cut it up if you can help it...

I remember seeing a kit to convert your shifter to a slap stick, need to find the mag I saw it in. Possibly someone here knows where to get it.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. I peruse the Jegs and Summit catelogs, and there's lots of options, but I want something that would bolt into the stock fitting, and work with the stock console.

My wife always says I have unreasonable expectations of stuff that should exist to solve a given problem.

Was that a bolt-up or did you have to fabricate it?

The original shifter was mounted to the console. I removed the shifter and cut away the mounts, then attached the new shifter to a plate and mounted that to the floor. On the console lid, I opened up the area where the shifter goes, then attached the shifter plate/boot directly to the top. Fit perfect, except that the console top is kind of V-shaped so there was a bit of a gap underneath the plate.

Sorry I don't have any better pics. This was like 15 years ago and the car is long gone now. One of the ones I miss the most....

I'm pretty sure there is nothing that is a bolt in, so fabrication will be necessary. Here's a B&M Quicksilver and mounting plate in my 66 Coronet. I only tack welded it to the floor so it could be put back to stock by future owners.

Maybe you meant this: http://www.duncan-motor-sports.com/prod01.htm

I'm not quite sure how this would work, though.
