I just picked up an 88 360 i am going to use for and engine build. I am thinking of going with the EQ heads with the GM3100 springs, and the basic mopar heavy stamped rockers which i think are the 1.6 ratio. I am thinking of using a COMP XE 268 cam with this, My question is about the lift of this cam, is it too much for the springs once you figure in the 1.6 ratio? I see theres two versions of the cam with that advertised duration, one with .454 lift both sides , and one with 4.77and .480 exhaust. Could i use the higher lift with those springs and rockers? Combo is going in a truck if it matters

thanks guys

At .320 lobe lift you are real close to the limit. I ran a cam with .320 on both sides and 1.7 roller rockers and it was tight but ran great to 6000rpm. Factory rockers are more like 1.65 ratio but the pushrod angle kills the actual lift back down to about what a 1.5 would give you, mabey a tad more. If you run the XE 268 you HAVE to check for coil bind on your exact motor. I think I had about .060 before coil bind. 1.6s would have given me a couple thou more, even a valve job would have helped. If you run the smaller one it should be good to go.

Are you talking raceing the truck or daily driver? You going to port them a little? What intake? headers? Stock 360 short block or different pistons?

PM me if you want the XE 268. I have a brand new one I might make a deal on.

Why not run the stock beehives? I am putting over .500 lift to mine on the EQ heads. Runs fine.

the stock springs are super soft. my stock magnum 318 would float the valves before 5000 RPM.

you can easily compress them by leaning on them with the heel of your hand. If your stock beehives are not floating, you are not pushing them very hard...

the truck i am building is gonna be a weekend cruiser, mostly street and maybe the strip for a lil fun time. I am going to have the bottom end rebuilt and KB107's installed and the block decked. I have just plan hedman truck headers alreay to use and prolly just use a eddy carb and intake. Its going with a 727. Prolly just bolt the heads on without porting.

3500 lb Volare. 1997 5.9 with a MP 4" crank, EQ heads with the stock behives above a MP .501/.513 lift hyd roller. 60ft 1.57 1/4 @ 11.61 wit no timing in it at all. I wouldnt run a .550 lift on them but have had no problem with them at this lift.

I have a set of stock magnums here and they go into coil bind before that.

For that motor I would use the XE 268. or even the comp 280 magnum. Should be a 425 hp motor with lots of TQ.

Sounds good Standonit.. can you give us more info on your combo??? rear gear? intake, chassis??? I am using the EQ heads with 2.02 intakes and the Comp XE275HL with 1.6 rockers.... 231/237 duration at .565 lift. I am using a 69 318 block with 4" crank in an 83 cordoba. I would have used the GM springs but I am using too much lift and had a set of the MP 6062 springs on hand with crane energizer 1.6 rockers. This combo pulls very good in the midrange and is still pulling when I hit the limiter at 6,000rpm.... I have no track times yet as I have to replace the oil pan and fix a leak..... EQ heads are working great for me!! TBF

EQ heads aside (because they are specing them for a certian lift with springs), I think the whole thing with what valve lift you can run comes down to the particular set of heads you have.

Things like valve length, springs, seat grinding, spring pocket cuts can all have an effect. No two heads are going to be identical---unless its in CNC production--even then there is tolerances.

I had a set of stock magnum heads that would take just over .500 lift and another set that was to close for me, i just considered it in coil bind just to be safe.

Safest bet here as in any engine build is measure, measure, and measure.

Outcast Dodge guy.
