I'm looking for a used cab over camper to
add to my F350 diesel for towing my car.
Your opinions/comments good or bad on the following brands: It will be a 9-1/2 ft unit.

(1) Lance
(2) Northland
(3) S & S Campers
(4) Fleetwood - no longer mfged

So you have available ALL four brands in the 9.5 footer ?

OF all four you list ...Lance is the best-est. And I have a Starcraft and Fleetwood me-self.

Doc,

I've found used units for sale of all 4 brands
and yes I know Lance is the "best", but some
people who have them for sale think they are
made of gold or is it they paid so much for
them new/used they think their worth alot more.

Lance the best??? Maybe THEY think so. Northland is a well made lower priced camper. S&S is good, Leakwood would NOT be on my list. Why isn't Arctic Fox on your list?

Dick Clark,

I know of Artic Fox, they are not as well known
here in SOCAL as the others and the few I have
found have been too new (price) for my budget.

How much can you afford? In 2003 I bought a brand new 8-1/2 foot Northland Grizzly with slide out from a dealer in Lewiston Idaho for $12,500 loaded on my truck. I realize that was a few years back but with the market down right now camper prices are also. Maybe you could call the factory (208 442 1815) and ask for the closest dealers. Ken (the owner) gave me the name of the dealer I bought from.

CA ...... AF is a good one toooo. But the BEST of the BEST ? ..... Big Foot.

As far as me spending almost 13k$ on a TC ? .. THAT is not in my "budget". IN FACT ...I don't have 13k$ in my SC and FW TC ...AND both of my Class A's !!

Now after I am done with the UPgrades ? ... I soiteny WILL !

Thank you for all the responses.

Today I purchased a 2001 Northland Grizzly
9 ft-11 inch cab over with electric jacks,
A/C and wet bath.

The electric jacks and wet bath were a must have.

NO!!! We bought a brand new Fleetwood. After a few months the frame cracked. They shipped it back to the factory to fix it. Got it back, and a couple months later the frame cracked again.

They finally bought it back from us, but they prorated it for the time we had it. Nevermind that part of that time it wasn't even useable..

After that I would never buy any kind of Fleetwood product. Not a fifth wheel, taga long, or a manufactured home. They have no ethics.

We replaced the Fleetwood with a Lance. 5 years and not a single problem. Well constructed, good feature set. Can't beat it.

The jacks stabilize the rig while you're parked. That way it won't rock in the wind, or when you walk through it. It also levels out the camper on otherwise uneven terrain.

If you don't want to spend the money on electric jacks, you can get an adapter for an electric drill. Use a cordless drill and your all set. Cranking by hand sucks.

I think you'll like that camper. We had our Northland 5 years with no problems worse than a loose wire for one of the jacks. We got all but 500 bucks back when we moved up to our Arctic Fox. They're a good bang for the buck and have pretty nice fit and finish inside.

As for the electric jacks, they aren't all that much more these days than manual and they bring all of that back at resale. Almost NOBODY wants to hand crank these days so they're all looking for electrics. I use mine to stabilize and level mine almost every time I park for the night.

OK .. but HOW do elec jacks do a better job stabilizing than the manuals? I do HEAR YOU on the PITA as far as hand cranking. I have had a TC since the middle 70's ... even back then ...I used a little drill to drop the jacks down... then hand-crank when the weight is on the jacks. I have a big monster 1/2 drill now to do the "ligting" when I am at home.

The TC that is on my truck now ... has not been off in maybe a year. And it was only off the truck then to fix the floor of the TC.

There is a NEG to having elec jacks ... they get stolen in parking lots.

I don't think anybody's saying they do a better job than manual. Maybe just that you're more likely to use them if it's push-button easy.

That being said, there are some light duty manual jacks available, but the electrics are all made from the larger tubing size and will be more rigid than the smaller tube size. And NO, I'm NOT saying all the mechanical jacks are flimsy.
