I'm thinking about having a set of spacers made to make my aluminum Halibrand wheels hub-centric instead of lug-centric. I was wondering if any of you out there have done something similar and how it worked out. Did you make the spacers out of aluminum or steel? Did you go for an interference fit in the wheel, or are they free floating? About how much did it cost you to have them made? Any info, input, or photos are much appreciated!

I'm curious why you would want hub over lug centric?

Based on what I've read over the years it is stronger and safer to mount them that way. That's why Ma Mopar did it on all the factory wheels. Also, it is a lot quicker and faster to mount the wheels on the vehicle when they are hub centric. FWIW I know Rick Ehrenberg is a big advocate of hub centric.

All good points, but are you road racing or auto-crossing? Why waste your money if it's only a cruiser?

It is primarily a street car, with an occasional trip to the drag strip. But out here in souther California "cruising" often includes some pretty brisk driving on canyon roads, so anything that ups the safety factor sounds good to me as long as the cost isn't extravagant. Also, muscling the big back wheel/tire on while I try to line up the lugs is a pain in the butt.

not all the factory wheels are hub centric. I had some stock steel rims off of a '97 van on my '96 ram and they weren't hub centric...I don't thing the magnum 500's were hub centric, either.

I don't know about the steel wheels, but the magnum 500's were essentially after market wheels. They were bought from a supplier that made the same wheel so that it would fit on Fords and GMs, too. It was not a "Mopar-specific" part.

Correct, Magnum 500 are not hub centric. That why is so hard to find original rims that don't have their lug tapers all wallowed out. My alignment guy like to wheel balance those rims on the car also, since they don't center right on a wheel balancing machine.

Now Magnum's are steel rims. Aluminum rims with tapered lug seating are going to wear faster. I've seen many factory aluminum rims with tapered steel lug seat inserts. Nice feature and I bet it's not by accident.
