I am trying to build an F440 HP 4BBL (assembled Trenton MI plant 8/12/69) as close to stock as I can. I have a conflict between sources as to when in the '70 model year Mother Mopar went to externally balanced 440 4BBL's with the six pack rods, balancer and flywheel/converter vs internal balanced.

If you have a 1970 F440 HP 4BBL (U code or E86 Option) with the original unmolested engine let me know the assembly date of your engine and if you have the six pack rods/balancer (eccentric weight)or a neutral balanced balancer.

I walked around the Mopar show at Englishtown this weekend and saw a mixed bag, some internal balanced, some external. The pattern looks like early F440HP's are internal and they didn't go external until the October '69 engine builds.

I have one in my U-code challenger. Assembly date of engine is Sept 5, 1969. It has the six pack rods with external balance. Engine was untouched before I rebuilt it.

The factory parts manual shows the heavy rod in all '70-'71 440 HP with no date limits.

FWIW my December 1969 6-Pack motor had the "six pack" rods and damper (which of course were used in all HP motors so the 6-Pack moniker is misleading)

I'd LOVE if someone could prove that some 1970 Cars got HP motors with LY's 'cause then I could use the lighter rods and still be PS legal.

I am not sure what "certify" means. I intend on taking it to Carlisle and the Nationals next year and have it judged.

My E86 Challenger is an automatic. It came with a blue 383 under the hood and the original 440 long gone. I found the right date 440 HP Block, bought reconditioned six pack rods and the correct weighted torque converter (rebuilt). I am going to go with SRP 30 over pistons.

I figured it would be easier to balance this non matching assembly with a virgin crank rather than than one that has already been cut or filled so I bought a new Eagle forged crank. I am thinking to balance the collection of new parts and be able to run it on an engine dyno I need to use a six pack flywheel (can't spin the torque converter without the trans) to maintain the correct weight offset from the torque converter. Does this sound reasonable?

Probably not, and nobody would likely care 'cause I'll probably be a full second behind the leaders, but *I* would know.

Nope. The original K-frame in my original motor, V-code car had no skid plate.
