I have a 1972 Charger. Has the "topper" half vinyl top.

I want to change to full vinyl top. Two people here at Moparts have offered me trim. HOWEVER, the trim is for an SE. Isn't the quarter window different on an SE and would the trim line up?

I have been told I need new quarter belt molding to go to full vinyl. Does anyone know what I need, exactly?

All I want to do is convert a 1972 charger to a full vinyl roof. Which trim package charger, roof trim can I use? An SE? or not?

You can use SE or non-SE chrome, actually any WH-WL-WP, one and the same six pieces of chrome for a full vinyl top. (3504750-1 3506344-5 3504756-7)
The quarter window moulding is different on an SE you cannot use it, and with the other 2 models there is 2 quarter window moulding choices, being with vinyl and without belt mouldings or without vinyl with belt mouldings (3504746-7 are the ones you want).

72 SE trim has a different 1/4 window molding, and (I believe) a different side trim molding (the molding that goes from the 1/4 window, along the 1/4 panel, to the rear vinyl top corner pieces)

I know for a fact that my 71 full top side trim molding is different than the 72 SE full top side trim molding....but I'm not sure what belt molding a 72 had on a NON-SE full vinyl top cars.

I'll get pics this weekend, if I can...

All 71-72 Charger models full top side trim mouldings were the same 3504750-1. There were variances in the 1/4 window mouldings from year/model, but the 6 pieces to surround the vinyl were the same. 3504750-1 for the sides, 3506344-5 for the corners, and 3504756-7 for above the decklid.

Then maybe you'd care to tell me WHY I have a 72 SE side trim piece (that I pulled off a 72 SE ) that is NOT the same as what's on my 71 R/T.

The 71 1/4 window piece attaches to the side trim...the 72 SE piece DOES NOT, and is shaped differently at the 1/4 window molding.

72 SE pieces are UNIQUE for the 1/4 window trim AND the side piece, as far as I can tell.

I'll get pic's next time I'm at the garage.

OK, I will start by saying I should not have said ALL, I was wrong in my thinking of what the "belt" moulding was.
This is the belt type moulding, as seen in moparmarks first picture of the 71 R/T :

I do not think, and according the the parts books that the side moulding is UNIQUE to the SE. The parts moparmarks has posted as being off has Charger 500 are the WITHOUT belt mldg type, but not specific to the SE.

Full set of the (as listed) WITH belt moulding chrome, and in the center I believe is the 1/4 window chrome for all 71-2 Chargers (except 72 SE) WITHOUT belt moulding:

71-2 Chargers 1/4 window chrome except 72 SE WITH belt moulding:

This will be long, but should clear up all confusion on this matter. Below are .pdf's of all the 71-72 parts book exterior trim pages.
71 WL Sedan (coupe) and WH Hardtop

#4 is 1/4 window moulding 3504740-1 w/belt mldg 3504746-7 w/o belt mldg.

#5 is side (belt) moulding 3504750-1 WITH belt mldg 3504752-3 Without belt mldg (The parts moparmarks has posted as being off has Charger 500)

#8 1/4 belt moulding 3506344-5, the one I first pictured in this post.

#6 deck opening panel upper 3504756-7, to fit both with AND without belt type moulding. The upper piece in moparmarks second picture (it will break down into 2 pieces)
71 WM Superbee

Lists out the same as above.

71 WP 500 Hardtop

Lists out the same as above.

71 WS R/T hardtop

Lists out the same as above.

71 WP SE Fastback

Only lists the belt moulding type as available for this model, the full set in the second picture I put in this post.

72 WL Sedan

Lists out the same as all 71 models with the exception of the SE (could have both types)

72 WH Hardtop

Lists out the same as above.

72 WP SE Fastback

#9 72 SE specific 1/4 window moulding 3613930-1
The rest of the trim says belt moulding only style, not the option, so the regular mouldings (my 2 pictures) must fit into the 72 SE 1/4 moulding.

So, after all that, in answer to the original question, look at the pix, and buy what matches. I personally would go with the belt moulding type, the #'s I said originally(the full set I pictured).

It is too bad the parts books did not even have one car pictured with the other mouldings, I would have figured it out sooner for sure.
I wish I had 72 1/4 window mouldings to take a picture of, 440trk, can you do that? Can you also try to fit the regular moulding into it?

I probably added confusion as opposed to making it clearer look at the pages and the pix, and it should make sense.

Thanks for posting those!

All 72 SE's had the belt molding (chrome on top of door, and beside rear 1/4 window)...which means it used the 3504750-1 side molding (molding #13 on the 72 WP line pdf). It appears that this molding was ALSO used on 71 belt molding cars as well....which I didn't think was the case. So I was incorrect on saying that side piece was unique to the 72 SE. It appears to be for any 71/2 belt molding car with a full vinyl top.

However,

Non-belt molding cars, (such as my R/T, which has paint showing on top of the doors, and a section of paint between the rear 1/4 window and the vinyl top trim) use a different 1/4 window/side molding than the belt molding optioned cars. part #3504752-3

If the original poster's 3/4 top car has belt moldings, he will need vinyl top trim specifically for a belt molding car. If his car does NOT have belt moldings, then he needs the vinyl top trim from a non-belt molding car. Mixing the side trim won't work, as they are specific to the type of belt molding used.

Hope that's clear as mud ...

I can get pics of the 2 different side moldings (belt molding vs. non-belt molding)...but I don't have possession of the uniquie 72 SE 1/4 window molding at this time.

If I come across the 72 SE 1/4 window mouldings, I will post a pic. I am going through piles of chrome right now, so I might...
