As the title says.

Is it absolutely necessary on a roller cam that is street use only?

Thanks
Frank

Yes, it is all that keeps it from outrunning the car. If your lucky like I was the timing cover will slow it down. On a flat tappet cam the lobes are ground on a slight (lower toward the rear of engine)angle to keep it pushed against the block also is the reason the lifters rotate in the bores. Roller cams are ground perpindicular to the cam centerline. Plus the buttons are very inexpensive

Don't build a BB without one, no matter what kind of cam you plan to run.

You don't need one on a small block. You do on a big block or a Hemi.
