Any problem using grade 8 hardware as a replacement for the factory stuff? Thanks

I've seen people use grade 8 hardware for headbolts!

I'm thinking it's OK but to be sure, look up what the strength is of the factory hardware in PSI and compare it to that of the grade 8. I'm sure the info is on the net somewhere under "fastener specs" or "fastener engineering" or something like that.

Good luck.

If you use washers under the flywheel bolt's, make sure they are hardened. Another thing to check, is to make sure the flywheel bolt head thickness don't interfere with the disc or pressure plate.

Grade 8 is strong enough imo.

I work for a company that produces flywheels. We will not warranty and damage caused from using grade 8 bolts. They do not have the shear strength of hardened pressure plate bolts. Corect hardware is available at any auto parts store.

Dustergirl, I'm thinking the bolt heads stick out too far anyway?

That's one big problem, our only good local auto parts store shut down. I'm stuck with Advance/Auto Zone until I find a NAPA in a neighboring town. I'll just get the bolts through Brewers since I need a couple other parts there anyway.

thanks guys

You really need to have the correct bolts and washers for your application.Wayne should be able to help but I know Mancini's has the MP kit in stock.

What size bolts are needed to attach a clutch to a flywheel on a small block, say a 340?

The thread size is 3/8 16 and 1" should do the job.
Some 10.5" plates need a small diameter head to clear the disc.
I only use either ARP or the MP bolt kit though
Its not worth it to buy fasteners not designed for a particular job.You have about a 50# circular saw blade spinning at 6000 rpm so please only use the right stuff

Oh, 1 more question. Does this job require lock washers?

I don't trust lock washers I have seen too many of them split.I will use an AN series flat washer and red Lock-Tite when I need something to stay in place

no lock washers. Just correct torque and sequence. Usually a star pattern. 65-75lbs but I would look it up to be sure.
