I've never heard of a 4-speed column shifted manual trans car.

Never heard of what you're talking about. But I've heard of old chevy trucks having a 3spd column shift with o/d on a seperate lever.

I took my drivers license test in a 1960 Mercedes 180D with a 4 on the tree. Slowest car I ever drove , had like 45 horsepower.
