Did not check end play before tear down. After rebuild I have .096 end play with both the .102 shims installed. Any ideas?

Are there two thrust washers on the output shaft? Sometinmes the thin steel washer goes missing and the 3-eared washer by itself won't provide enough thickness.

is that the play in the output shaft or the input shaft?
