Hi, Was wondering if anyone on here has put a turbo 400 in a A body and if they know how much of a pain it will be.
Have trans,Ultra bell,conv. Fresh

Had a MASSIVE 727 explosion may 2008 and have not been back since.Fell beter now and getting ready to go again.
I have a 72 demon.493 pump gas motor, exhaust and drag radials.Car goes 10 teens in the heat.Went through 7 torque flights! No Junk Either!
Last 2 were ATI! Brand New! The Last 1 nearly blew my foot off.with a blanket.Drum explosion Nothing left of the trans.Broken foot and tore the ligaments off of my ankle, and had destoyed arch! I am still walking and ready to race again.

Ok not trying to cry but I am done with 727's everyone says they can build one that won't blow up.Others sell you one done and it blows up and does not have the parts in it that you payed for.

So any info on the turbo deal would be much appriciated. Thanks Tom

good luck with your trans - i just gotta say that you never had an aftermarket drum in there otherwise it would not have exploded - sorry to hear and hope you recover fast!

The T-400 is a great racing transmission and you can not argue with results and track records.

Drop one in your car and don't look back.

Who cares if it does not fit .... make it fit and you are done ..

There is a reason why the majority of racers don't run mopar or ford trans, its because the glide and the 400 work.

Just trial fitted one for my duster.Looked like the governor cover was going to hit the frame crossmember, but my trans guy said you could filp it inside out or make a flat cover if it was full manual and didn't use the governor.I'll start on it again when it warms up some and let you know.

I put a 4L80 behind my big block in a B body. I had to do minimal trimming. I fabbed a new rear crossmember. Had to cut and move the right collector on my underchassis TTI headers. I have a wilcap and a TCI adapter. Chrysler mini starter in stock location. Turbo 400 is a little smaller than the 4L-80. All in all a pretty easy conversion. Galen

Thanks everyone for the info.I guess when I dig out from the snow I will get started. My big concern also is the header clearence.I have CPPA in the chassis 2" headers.Very tight with 727 I think it may be easyer to make the trans. tunnel removable so I can drop it in from the top.The 727 was a nightmare with a blanket on it to put in and take out.I am not sure how this 400 will work with a normal gm trans shield. So any added info will be much appriciated.....

Thanks Tom

lots of successful 727's out there that stay together especially in a 10.0 car.

i've done everything wrong that you can do to 727 and mine is still going strong

best thing is it fits like it was made for the car

keep it all mopar

by the way mine is done by John Cope at CRT

either way good luck

WHY????

990hp 499 lowdeck here. A "we" built 727 with good parts. Will be going on its 7th year this year. NO PROBLEMS and leaves with the wheels in the air every run.

It was Chryco & others who talked me into my glide... that and the price, weight, parts option, parts cost & availability, $3500aud on my door for a brand new full house transbraked trans with two brand new converters, JW ultra bell & JW "the wheel" flex plate, came with a full print out & writen warrenty for up to 800hp, here in Aust you just can't get that in a 727. the JW ultra tail is a new addition... next is a JW ultra case

Just because the trans was built by ATI does not make it good. I have a ATI converter in my car that broke in 47 runs, got it fixed and is ok now. But I would never have ATI build me a transmission. If you feel more confortable with a 400, ok, but they can explode too. There are better sprags and drums for the 400 that probably should be installed. I installed a Powerglide in my 70 Dart to race Super Street which was not bad, but I am sure the dimensions on a 400 are larger. Then you must fit for a shield or blanket.

JW Performance will be offering a Turbo 400 with an ultra case and ultra bell making it possible to bolt a turbo 400 directly to Mopar block (no adapter mid-plate).
The case and the bell are SFI certified so no additional shields will be needed.

a 727 would hold up fine 4 his application. just need a few good parts, steel billet drum, billet low/reverse piston, hardened band strut & a bolt in sprag. trans will last 4 years & years. stay safe, seeya.

My trans builder's experience is that a torqueflite is fine as long as it's footbraked (no trans brake). If you're from the Chicago area, this guy built the torqueflites that were ran in the Sparticus car for years.

ATI coming news at SEMA claims

Quote:

The next upgrade component is ATI’s 904/727 Torqueflite. One inherent problem with the Torqueflite transmission is that it wants to break the rear sprag on a hard launch.
ATI’s new rear sprag, which only utilizes one OEM inner element piece, is a totally new design that promotes more contact area then a conventional roller clutch.
It is retained in the case by three 1/4-inch dowels and four 1/4 inch shoulder bolts.

This allows the Torqueflites to easily handle 1000 lb/ft of torque

Shouldn't a 727 be just fine at this level of horsepower?

If I remember correctly, it's about a 9" difference in length between the two transmissions. Driveshaft for T400 will be longer.
