Looking for a new carb for my 70 GTX. I'm currently using a Holley Street Avenger 770cfm and the car seems to bog or just has no bottom end torque. It's a street only car with a mostly stock 440, iron heads, MSD Ign. compcams 231dur 525lift and factory iron intake, 727 TF and 3.55 gears. Was thinking 650cfm Thunder Series carburetor. All thoughts welcome.

Have you tried tuning the 770?

I think those are jetted with 72's from the factory. A set of 76's might cure the bog (might not too). Are you running 36-38 degrees total mechanical advance? What about Vacuum advance (many 440's like a total (combined) of about 54) That can greaty improve throttle response.

I've got the initial timing 15deg. tot mech 36 and 52 w/vac hooked up. I get ping anything beyond that. I have O experience tunning carbs but it seems to be way rich. Plugs are almost black. Got this carb second hand so I have no idea who's been in it.

Since its a second hand carb, before I did anything else, I would tank off the primary bowl. Maybe the previous owner put 80 + jets in there!!! MAybe it has a blown power valve? Check those two things next and then re-think a strategy before ditching the carb...
