Is there a way to check to see if a torque converter is good? I was give one out of a 69 440 (R/T) and need to know how I can make sure it is good before I put it in.

Ask around for a good local performance or trans shop and find where you can have it pressure tested and to see if its true. True as in that the neck of the unit is straight and not warped, wobbling. There is some awesome new technology out there compared to when that unit was new.

Truthfully, throw it in as-is. Maybe one out of 500 used TC's are bad, if that many. The odds are on your side. Save your money.

Kind of what I figured. Now this has been sitting for a lot of years and is extremely dirty. Is there an appropriate method to clean this before I install it in the car?

my biggest fear would be if it had a tranz failer and is full of shavings..

but have run a many used ones from the JY with out a problem

if its known to be good(trust who gave it to you) then run it

only thing I could see wrong with it is if it got trash in it from sitting and the snout not pluged

dirt or object fell in it maybe

you could have it open and checked and tweeked for some more stall but then you would be better off starting with a reman high stall TC to begin with

reman runs around 120$ at my local tranz shop

and I have a high stall /6 tc behind my 318 for a tad more stall

good luck either way

If memory serves, one of my service manuals said to fill the TC wtih kerosene and slosh it around for a while, then drain and repeat.
