I have bought after market tires for my car that need to have three inch studs. The studs that I was told to get, are bigger then the factory studs in there circumference, where the studs are pulled in to the axles. I was told that I needed to drill out the axle holes, to accomadate the slightly bigger three inch studs, size. Can anyone tell me the size bit I need to buy to drill out the holes for me to be able to use the new three inch studs? Just in case you need to know, my car is a 318 plymouth fury. A person at the parts store told me that he had taken out his axles, and had them pressed in, after drilling, I am not able to take my axles out and I do not have a press, will I too need to do this to get the studs to seat? Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it.

1/2-20 studs? I seated ARP 3" studs with an acorn lugnut turned around backwards and a dab of antiseize. Pulled right into place no problem, no drilling

I just took mune into NAPA and had all new studs installed along with new bearings. My total time for removal and install was about the same as removing the rear tires...
So what is so hard about wacking the old studs out drawing new ones in. c
Can have a set in and be done and driving before you get an axle out.

The guy I bought the wheels off of, bought the studs, and I bought them from him, along with the chrome lugs. The packaging says that they are 1/2 inch. I found a set of Moroso lugs that were 7/16 and bought those I guess they will work. I compared the 1/2 inch lugs with the factory ones and found that the 1/2 's were bigger.

NO WAY should that car have 7/16 studs. Only the small bolt pattern A bodies came with a 7/16 stud. I sure wouldn't put a 7/16 stud on that car. Get some 1/2 inch studs with the correct knurl.

For me? Nothing is hard about stud removal. For my Charger, the studs were already broken off, and I needed bearings anyway, so I just had my NAPA do the deed (since I don't have the proper tools to replace the bearings).
This stuff doesn't scare me at all. But, I also know when to have shop with the right equipment do something that I'd otherwise have to "rig", know what I mean?

Fine if you need bearings anyway but in the case of if you don't need the bearings why go to the needless time consuming job of pulling an axle. When all you need is a BFH and an over size nut or stake of oversize washers for a shim to draw against and a flat sided nut to draw the stud in and an ratchet and socket or better yet an impact wrench to pull the stud/s in.  Personally I don't like to do an hour's worth of work for a 15 minute job.

By saying they fit right in to your axles, do you mean with being pressed in, or pulled up tight by using lug nut?
This is exactly what the guy at Mancini told me when I asked if he had Moroso studs that would fit my axles. He said that the ones that I had, that I could not bring into postion with a breaker bar, and a lenght of pipe were the ones the Moroso claimed or he claimed were the right ones for my application.
He said I would have to bore the axles out to within 3 thousands of and inch of the diameter listed on the the studs packaging then pull the axles and have the studs pressed in.
I hope you understand why I am trying to make sure that these will fit. I have been through the mill just trying to get these tires on my car. I hae the original studs from Moroso that I cannot get on and now I just sent back the mistake I made of ordering the 7/16 thinking that this was referring to the knurl; oh well,   no use being stupid unless you show it.

Maybe I'm stupid, but...... "aftermarket TIRES that need longer studs" ??? What am I missing?

It is not the after market tires that will require the longer studs. It is after market aluminum wheels that are thicker than the steelies and require a special shank nut. The stud must protrude into the threaded portion of the nut at least the diameter of the stud.

no use being stupid unless you show it.
I do not know how to take the axles out, and if all I need are Mr. Gasket studs and they will pull into place just using the lug bolts then that would be the better way for me to go, no cost of drilling out axles to fit the studs that would need to be pressed in. I just need to know from the guy who recommended the Mr, Gasket studs if they will indeed pull on with the lug.
If they will not, I may as well drill mine out,
and have the moroso studs I have pressed in, and pay to have axles taken out. I did ask in this thread, if some one could refer me to a site that would show me the way to remove the axles, but I had no luck. I am pretty good mechanic wise just do not have the knowledge of how to porceed.
