I plan on upgrading to 17 or 18" wheel tire combo and I really want to fill out the rear wheel well. I'm looking for suggestions on rim/tire sizes as well as wheels to use.... maybe 285-45-18? Maybe 17s in the front? I like the torq thrust... any other suggestions? Thanks

The trick is that you need to stay up around 27 to 28 inches in diameter. That can be hard to do as a lot of 17 inch and 18 inch tires are shorter than that. If the tire gets too short it gets lost in the big wheelwells on the Mopar muscle cars.

Something like a 235/55-17 tire works really well on most Mopar muscle cars. That tire is fairly tall and it has more cross section than most of the factory tires. It is about as wide as you can go up front before starting to run into issues. You can go wider out back of course but you'll still want to find something that is the correct height.

18" all around would not be a problem... 225 or 235 40 up front perhaps, along with what you mentioned for the rear

Not a Mopar, but here are 18" I put on a Camaro to give you a general idea of height.. 245/45-18 up front and 285/40-18 out back..

And 245/40-17 all around on my old Valiant Ute (A body basically)

Here's my set-up

Rims are American Racing Torq-Thrust
ARE-105MS7865B
ARE-105MS8965B

Dr Diff 1" relocation kit gives me about 1" clearance from tire to leaf spring on each side.

17x8 (4.5" BS) up frt - 17/225/50 (25.9") $95 each
18x9 (6" BS) in rear - 18/275/40 (26.7") $115 each

I looked at the 285's for the rear but it was almost $100 more per tire. I looked for common sizes to keep the cost down.

18 x 8 and 18 x 10 on the orange one..

17 x 8 all around on the ute.

I am building 18's for my Torana too, going 18 x 8's and 10's for it as well...

I buy alot of wheel components, so getting different sized outers to try is easy for me at least.

If you like the Torq Thrust, you might also like the Vintage Wheel Works V45, or Coddington's New Wave or Destructor wheels, or Coy's C-5.

Vintage

Coddington's

New Wave

Destructor

Looks like the Coddington's are only available in 17x8 for 17s. Fine for front, but 17x9-9.5 for rear would be better.

Coy's wheels are an option, also.

C-5

None's cheap, but they look nice. The Coy's are my favorite. Saw a set on a 'Cuda the other day, 18s in front, and 20s in back. Way too big, 17s and 18s would have looked better. But the style fit the car well.

The coys polished are the look I like. I just have to figure out the size of wheel (offset etc) I will need and the largest tire I can run.
Theres a black 71 pro touring cuda on ebay now that hit the nail on the head. I may email the boys and ask them what theyre running

The problem with Coys (beside the fact they are made in china) is that they are a one piece wheel, so it will limit your backspacing options abit..)

The 255/50-17 is a great tire for muscle cars. That tire used to be super hard to find but I think there are more of them now. When the Impala SS first came out you had to have special permission to even order those tires.

The China part doesn't bum me out as much as the one piece aspect. It's my understanding that one piece wheels are heavier than two piece (or even three piece) wheels, or am I misinformed?

Oz, do you know anything about the other wheels?
(Sorry for the hijack, Crocker.)

Some weight loss in the wheel department would be a nice plus...

TIA,
Marq

Which other wheels ?

Most of the one piece stuff I have seen does seem to be heavier then a similar sized 2 piece billet wheel, just a matter of what price range you are looking at.

I'm old school (steel wheels) so please please educate me. Can 2 piece wheels be altered to change the offset?

NO greater than 17's on a e-body or any for that matter. If greater, the "look" goes to the wheels and not the car. Too small looks caca as well.
But I'm old school, I like to look at the lines or style of the body as well as the wheels,
