I have a 71 Ebody w/426 hemi dynoed at 525hp. The stock type radiator isn't cutting it in the warm weather.

Anyone have a take on how to keep the car running cool? opinion on radiators or additional cooling methods?

I prefer the stock look but would rather protect the investment over looks and I want the drivability

Thanks Joe

You will probably get 20 different opinions but here's mine. Use a 26" Griffin nascar type aluminum radiator with a high flow mechanical water pump and a 7 blade Mopar cop car type fan, clutch and shroud. If you are still flush with money use Evans coolant. Do not use underdriven pulleys. This is the exact setup I have on my 416 Challenger. IMO you can't do much better than this. -Bob

I have a Griffin B-Body radiator in my Charger and it cools my 528 Hemi very nicely.

Take care,
Rick

A good waterpump, like the Edelbrock, and high flow thermostat is going to help out a bunch. I'd buy the pump first since it's a lot cheaper than the aluminum radiator and see what happens.

You can always buy the aluminum radiator later, but I think the pump will make a bigger difference (assuming your existing radiator is the proper one for your car and in good condition).

A stock recored 26" radiator is sufficient to cool my 528" Hemi. I'm running a 7 blade fan with themostatic clutch and currently no shroud.

I've got a copper 26" from U.S. Radiator with a stock 7 blade fan, shroud, and water pump. It cools my 472 beautifully.

Thanks all for the response,

One more statement and question,
I have ralley gauges and they are restored but still stock, so temp doesn't read in degrees, they read like a bar graph Cool, Medium and HOT..

Many response have stated theirs runs cool..what is cool in degrees?

I have a new 26" (stock type) clutch fan,7 blade fan w/shroud. I am thinking of adding a temp gauge that reads degrees, but for nopw I have to make sure it is cool first.

Thanks again.

Anything from 190 to 210 is probably a good range to shoot for.

For a 496"B around 550 HP here's my setup. Stock style 26" aluminum radiator from Mancini with matching shroud, 5 blade MP fan with thermostatic fan clutch, MP high volume water pump, Mr Gasket 180 deg "high flow" thermostat. If anything, it overcools. The Mr Gasket thermostat must crack open a little early. Except on a hot day it runs 170-180 most of the time. On a hot day it will run 180-190 at idle and cool off running. I'm well pleased with cooling system performance and can use stock hoses from NAPA for a 26" radiator.

When I ran without shroud it was hotter at idle on a hot day. The shroud helped.
