The 3.91 or 3.90 stroke was very popular conversion years ago, take a high deck (413-426W-440) forged steel crankshaft and offset grind the rod throws to BB Chevy rod journal size(2.200 from 2.375 stock Mopar size) and use a aftermarket BB Chevy long rod with a custom made piston and gain 20 C.I. due to the stroke increase. The pros are it can be done cheaper, in some places, than buying a new stroker crankshaft. The bad side is you can now buy a decent lnoger stroker crankshaft or stroker kit for close to the same money as doing the stock crank conversion and all the other parts. I built two of those motors last year, one with a stock 440 crank offset stroked and one with a BRC crankshaft with that stroke I used 7.100 log H beam rods on both motors, one set of Eagles and one set of CAT brand, one set of KB forged pistons and one set of Diamond custom pistons. I dynoed tested the bracket race motor, BRC crank with Eagle rods and KB pistons, 720 HP at 7000 RPM and the other motor is in my pump gas Duster. That motor has 10.46 to 1 comp. ratio with a set of stock out of the box Eddy RPM heads and a six pak that has ran 11:30 ET at Las Vegas last year at the MATS race not tuned up properly It will run a little faster with some more tuning and tweaking

383 w/3.900 stroke. 915 heads and a set of hand ported 915 heads, flat top pistons and a .560 lift solid flat tappet cam. Makes good power. No notching the block or oil pick-up boss. 449 c.i. of junk and went 9.08 at 148+ in a 2500lb car. I bought the block and heads from a junkyard and someone gave me the 440 steel crank with a screwed up main journal. Cheap fun. Cranks are available from 440 source, Ohio, and I'm sure others and cost less than having a stock crank prepped. Pistons may be a problem but customs are only a couple hundred more than shelf pistons.
Sorry for continuing this off topic ... you don't need a custom piston to do that in a 383 , an off the shelf Diamond 1.320 CH piston and a 6.700 rod and you are all set .

i have done 3 all with 7.100 rods je pistons they run very good 2 with indy heads 1 with stage 6 cnc heads all 3 are 14 to 1 comp
Allen, Did you use a custom piston to get that kind of compression? Thanks, Brian

Thanks for the replys folks. The reason for my questions is because I was ready to purchase a 493 stroker kit for my new engine, but basicly the mfg of the kit talked me out of it. I was OK with the extra HP, but the torque concerned me a lot. My car has 29.5X11.5 MT slicks, S/S leaf springs and weighs in at 3270 lbs on the track. It runs very consistant at 6.8x/99 in 1/8 and 10.8x/121 in 1/4 now with a .060 over 440 (worn out!) I don't want to change the combo to much, just build a good bracket engine. I feel that I can use more horse power, but I don't need much more torque. I'm thinking that a .030 over, 3.90 stroke with my .590 solid cam, team G intake, 1050 carb, Stealth heads and about 13.5-14.0 compression will give me a little more torque, but quite a bit more HP. By adding the extra stroke it will help get the compression up there a little easier. Or am I way off base? Thanks for any sugestions, Brian
