Hey what is the best timing light(with advance)
that I can buy for the money?
I was checking out the mac tools digital or the Equus digital.I like the idea of seeing the engine rpm on the light itself, instead of having to look in the car at the tach. Are there better timing lights out there than these two?

I've been researching this very thing recently and ended up with a SnapOn MT2261.
I got an excellent used one on eBay for about 150 bucks.
Best timing light I've ever used!

I was looking at the Equus pro digital online.Does anyone have any experience with these?
I am just looking to buy a good quality one without breaking the bank and the Equus seems to have the same features as the more expensive Snap-on brand

I prefer a non-adjustable. And timing tape on my car. Faster, easier. Can see whats going on without thinking about the light setting

I use the equus with the dial.

It was a good price, and reliable.

I've always used dial back lights, and prefer them to digital style ones

I really like my Sears Craftsman.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

Equus 3568

Its digital and has a tach on the screen. Works mint.

I was asked to contribute money to help solve the civil unrest in Egypt, but I suspect it's some sort of pyramid scheme.

My Sears light served me well until the dial started getting loose. I began having a hard time passing smog (+/- 1 degree on the factory timing specs) so I bought the Snap-on mentioned above. Love it! The tach feature is very handy as well.

I agree. I sold auto parts for 15 years, and my father, most of his working life. We used to collect test gear once in awhile for repair, and I've seen a number of delay lights that simply were not accurate.

Either mark the balancer--an easy afternoon job in the driveway, or use timing tape.

Measure the circumference of the balancer and devide by 360 degrees, would probably be easier with a metric measuring tape marked in milimeters.

Use the MP timing tape. It sticks on the OD of the harmonic damper. You do hqve to clean off the surfqace so the tape willstick, but a llittle carb cleaner and you're set.

I use my Sears Craftsman dial-back light with my electronic ignitions, no problem.

That's right, and not all that difficult. Start by making sure the factory mark is correct. Make a "positive stop" by putting a bolt in an old plug shell. Hacksaw the crimp off the back, drive the guts out of the plug, and braze in a bolt or tap the shell to thread one in.

Like this:

http://www.650motorcycles.com/Isky3.jpg

Unhook the battery!!

Pull no1 plug, and feel around with something like a plastic hanger or wire so you know you won't force the stop in on the piston.

Gently turn the crank with a socket, until the crank stops. Make a temporary mark on the wheel under TDC. Repeat going CCW. When you get done, you'll have two marks, and "true" TDC will be halfway in between. If you are lucky, the original mark will be that mark.

Now, crawl under with a small flex tape and measure around the wheel CAREFULLY. Do it twice just to make sure.

Let's say the balancer is something like 24 1/2 inches around. 24.5/360 is .0681" for each degree, or .681 for 10 degrees

Of course you can do this with metric. Do NOT use dividers or calipers. You must use a tape or flexible rule, so it "rounds" over the circumferance.

Then just scribe and file the marks right into the wheel. If you don't have a scribe, sheet rock screws are cheap

When you get done, you can carefully overlap the TDC and 10* marks on the wheel and the tab, and they should line up. You can then step up to the same deal, using the 10*/20* marks, and the 20*/30 marks, etc.

I used to mark every 10*, check them, and then use dividers to mark halfway in between, for 5* markers.

This is not absolutely accurate, but it's close enough for most of us, and it's closer than using a delay light that's out of calibration.

My health ain't all that great anymore, but I bet I can still do this not much more than a couple of hours.

Well I bought an Equus Pro light and have used it,however it's not that user friendly. So my brother-in-law gave me a Snap-On digital light(part # MT1261A)however,I do not have a manual on how to use it and he does not have it.
Can anyone on this board scan the directions part of the manual for me as I have called Snap-On direct and I can't even purchase a manual because the timing light is 11 years old.If anyone could help me out that would be great!-John

As mentioned find EXACT TDC with a positive stop then mark several common marks..0632683" around the circumference is 1 degree so 38 degrees would be 2.404". I cut a piece of flexible wire to that exact length measured with a 2-3" mike & mark the balancer exactly. that being said I have a sears dial back & it's a fun toy to play with but they are based on time delay & different diameters of harmonic balancers would throw it off,how far I have no idea even if it would be close to 1 degree in a 38 degree spread but I do wonder what make of balancer are they calibrated to? MSD throws off some dialbacks but I don't have MSD so not an issue for me.
