My car recently decided that it doesn't want to start anymore, and I've been trying to chase down the problem for a few weeks now. I was worried about a bent valve (lots of back-firing), so I pulled my driver's-side head and poured gasoline in all four combustion chambers last night. In the morning (~ 8 hours later) the 3, 5, and 7 chambers were all almost completely full (a little had pro'ly evaporated off) and at the same level. The #1 chamber had about half as much gasoline in it as the others. Should I worry about replacing a valve if the leak is that small?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Why not just have a valve job done while you have it apart? Not very expensive and you'll know it's right without guessing.

Shouldn't need to replace the valves if they aren't brunt too bad to just reface the valves and seats and go.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

You'll still have to find the cause of your backfiring and hard starting. Good idea to at least lap the valves at least while heads are off.

I'd lap the valves & reinstall the head & continue the search for what's causing the no/hard start & backfiring.

Lay a straight edge over all the valve tips. You may find some sunken valves. No use buttoning it up that way.
