Since I have a 318 and not a 360...I'm considering investigating one of Hughes 318 stroker kits...I know most everyone else is basing their stroker on the 360 block but I have this 318 so...what the heck...thought I would just use it...this will be a street/strip pump gas engine preferably making around 400-450 hp...any past experiences or opinions? Thanks...

Hughes puts together some truely "drop in " packages for the small block. Several levels of HP and lots of options to choose from to tailer your stroker as you wish. Although they are in to big blocks, new hemi stuff these days, small blocks is where they excel. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

here's my . the difference between a 390 and 408 will be about 4.5% less power if built identically, about 20HP/lb-ft tq on a 400-450 HP build.

a core 360 should only be about $200 or less, and is cheaper to build. pistons are a little cheaper, cranks are a little cheaper, cheaper , rings are cheaper (common 4" bore as a 350 chev or 302 ford), so in the end it would cost about the same buying a 360 core block.

318's have a small advantage of smaller main bearings, which will have less drag, freeing up a few HP. but with the smaller bore, there will be more valve shrouding, which will cost a few ponies, making that a wash....

that said, I think there is one big advantage to building a 318 based stroker, IF you have an '85 up block: factory roller cam. it allows you to use OEM roller lifters and retention hardware, making it cheap to run a roller cam. retrofit hydraulic roller lifters run in the $400-500 range, whereas stockers, if in good shape can be reused, or new ones are in the $120 range.

if it's a flat tappet block, I'd say look for a core 360 or a magnum 360 (also a roller cam motor), if you plan on using magnum style heads....

I built a 318 stroker (390cid) because I had a 1968 block and found a new set of Ross pistons for $300.

K1 4" crank, Eagle Rods (purchased from Todd Marsh "Sasquatch" owner of Marsh Performance) Ross flat top pistons, Edelbrock heads (OOTB), Air-gap dual plane, BG 750 silver claw, Comp solid cam (.540/.555 252/262 @.050 106 lobe sep) TTI headers, 727, Dynamic 9.5” converter, 3.91 gears in a 8 ¾ sure grip, carter mechanical fuel pump, full exhaust with Dynomax turbos, full interior, 3,400lbs race weight ran 11.35 at 118mph shifting at 5,700rpm

This winter I’m putting a roll bar in, pulling out the stock tank and going to a 5 gal fuel cell, Mallory 140 fuel pump, moving the battery to the trunk, moving to a spool and 4.30 gears, M1 intake, Holley 950 Alcohol car, and hopefully doing a valve job and some minor porting on the heads and hope to be running 10.90s next year.

Lots of good info...thanks guys...makes me feel better about using the 318...however...today at lunch I was telling a guy about this thread and he says "I've got a 360 out of a Lil Red Express truck sitting in my storage building, carb to pan, want it?" LOL...hhmmmmmm ...guess I'm going to go check it out ...

Ok...looks like I will be looking at the 360 tomorrow...anything on the exterior I should specifically look for (sorry, not normally a small block guy)...were some of the early Lil Red engines W2s? Owner says it was pulled years ago because it was smoking, since sold the truck now the engine is an orphan...(just realized I'm hijacking my own thread )

I took a block to get a final hone on it today, guy asked why I wanted to build a 318 and there was no way and he had never seen one bored so big.

Looked confused over the 4 bolt mains.....

I asked him if he ever seen this on a 318 block and pointed to the X.

Then he told me I needed more piston to cylinder wall clearence because of the altitude....I still dont get it......

So if its the right 318, its all good. This 318 will be a 422 incher when all is said and done.

Ive a hughes 426 kit in a 360 block...kit was dead on perfect. I dont understand the piston choice, but they know more then me.

Tell us which one is special first so we make this thread last maybe a week or so

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

No LRE trucks were W2's. They wanted to do it but something about california emissions... To make sure it's a 360 block, the numbers are stamped on the driver's side front of the block just below the deck.
I remember a shop that was sonic checking 318 blocks and boring them to 4". Strokers were coming out at 402 inches. Or just get that 360 and build a 408-426" small block. That'd be my advice.

even easier, there's a big "360" cast into the side of the block behind where the starter would sit.....and the damper will be ~ 1.125" thick...

It should be an E58 motor and if it is all original, it will have little stickers ( in most cases ) on the front of the valve covers that read "Premium 360".

IMO it's not worth risking a 318 to go 4" bore....tons of LS1 motors have the same ~3.90" size bore as a 318 and some of them are going low low et's.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression the 392ci was obtained through the additional stroke...4" stroke and .03over equals 392...so there is no good reason not to stroke the 318...I have a 318 roller motor that I plan on stroking. I'm going to use a 318/340 4" stroker crank and a set of forged pistons from Hughes made by Keith Black. And I'm gonna turbocharge it.
