The oil pans that have the tie rod passing thru them... is there any thing that can be done to the rod ends to make it easier to come apart? I would like more pan capacity, but don't want to have to beat the tie rods apart to pull engine or oil pan.
Thanks, Brian

It's the center link that goes through the pan and although I haven't used one, I don't see how you could make it easier to come apart. Everything that bolts to it is a tapered press fit.

A tie rod seperating tool might make the job easier.

MR2 chassis sells a bushing that can go in there to make it so the sterring link drops on and off. Most of the Superstock guys do this mod so you can easily drop it.

There is a guy that make bushing to go in so that they can be removed easier. I've see him at the Indy show in March for the past couple years. I will try to look for his flyer when I get home.

QUICKLINX, Never use a tie rod seperater or "pickle fork" again. Used by the not so famous "Hemi Fred" as well as others. Several SS/AH cars have his stuff. Call Mike Roth at MR2 Performance. 765 483 9371. Tell him Frito sent ya.

Do you modify the center link (all 4 joints)? I'm assuming you machine the center links from tapered to straight? and use the bushing on the taped shank of the joint?
Do you have a web site for MR2?
Thanks, Brian

Mine comes apart pretty easily, but it's been that way for decades and has been apart & back together God knows how many times. It's no big deal, I can have the pan off & back on in under 20 minutes, including turning the crank so the counterweight clear the pan flange (I marked that position on the balancer), and I take my time (translation: old & slow!).

Not to change the topic,,,,but I noticed some mention of Clay City/Kentuckey in this thread. I used to race at River City/Rt#5 with David and Satch Brown. I heard David had an accident, but have lost contact with all of these guys...anybody know them or have any updates on them??

Wild Bill is correct everything goes through the pan, depending on what kind of access you have its not that bad. I'm at work right now, but if you look at the post that says Engine installed in Valiant (page 2-3) you can see my pan in 1 of the pics. My whole front end comes off so its easy for me. And a pickle fork is a must to remove the center link if its been on there a while esp for the first time after that they are not as bad. I had to relocate the hole in my pan (milodon) due to engine set back. The 440 source also makes a pan w/ hole in it.

If you use the correct tool (which isn't a pickle fork) then the center rod comes off really quick. I used to run the center rod thru the oil pan on my car and it would only take a couple of minutes to pop it loose. Just need to use the correct tool per the service manual. A pickle fork just tears up the ends and ruins the seals.

That is correct, I have modified my "pickle fork" so it does not damage the boots.
