Hello Everyone, My trunk extension panel was previously replaced on my 70 challenger. Now I've just received my new fuel tank vent kit, and need to know where to drill to mount the plate with the grommets.

I could use some measurements.

Is it one big oval hole, or 2 little holes just under the grommets?

My 70 challenger only has 1 vent line. Do I need both grommets, or should I only have one?

What's the plate for? Why not put the grommet right in the trunk extension panel?

I'd like to do this "correct". Input appreciated.

Thanks
Tav

The hole in the trunk extension is a large oval.
The plate covers the oval.
For correct appearing you will want to put this in and has both gromets.
I don't have measurements at the moment. But here are some pics.

That helps, now I know which way the plate goes. 2 screws on one side vs. 1 screw on the other.

Anyone else have any info?

Thanks

I just pulled mine out the other night. I'll get you some pics of oval cut out with the location measurements later this morning. Should be able to get you fixed up.

The edge of the trunk extension does NOT run parallel to the edge of the fuel vent cut out. The trunk extension is angled on the edge.

Not yet. I'm still a little about it and that I didn't notice until a few days ago. I do not have a welder so the guy who is doing my media blasting has been doing my sheet metal repair also. I'll have him do it when I take the rest of the car over to be blasted.

Thanks, Joe

Is that how it's supposed to look, a grommet with a small tube coming out. The one on my '70 Challenger is a grommet with a large tube, similar to fuel fill.

Possibly an emissions deal...ECS?

We have a '70 Barracuda that originally had the large vent tube in the trunk that was about the same diameter as a fuel fill. It had 4 smaller lines at the very bottom that ran to the gas tank and/or fuel return.

I replaced the whole nine yards with the standard fuel tank and vent assembly.

Maybe, car is a California car with the California emissions called out on the Fender Tag. I recall only one vent tube coming out of the tank though. My 71 has 4 vent tubes coming out of the tank.

Right, California sold vehicles only in 70. Should have N95 on the fender tag. ECS is Evap control. routes the carb bowl gas fumes back to the tank instead of letting them vent to atmosphere.

The pictures don't agree with each other on the placement of the screws. The green car has the two screws near the quarter whereas the blue one has the two screws on other side of the oval hole.

Took this pic . from my " NOT RESTORED " '70 T/A. If you look real hard through the rust you will see the screws. I've had this since early '73 so I know it hasn't been touched. Man I wish I had some Money! I'd be on it! Hope this helps. Kev

The fender tag does have N95, California Emissions called out. I'm pretty sure the tank only had one tube coming out of it. I'll have to double check, which will be easy as the original tank is out of the car due to a leak.

So California emissions is basically carb fumes back to tank correct? That would mean I should have two lines from the fuel tank to the carb, one for supply, one for vent return. The emissions do not also include the 3-tube breather as well do they?

Thanks,

Joe

My Blue 70 Challenger is an early car and had 1 repaint in the 80s but is basically unmolested. I wonder if they varied at the factory any. Mine does match yours on your T/A.

Excellent as always Beepbeep. Looks like I need to get the correct 3-port breather, as well as the correct fuel tank.

Just a FYI, none of the repo tanks come with the expansion tank, just need to remember when filling not to top it off so there is some expansion room, otherwise it will make its own, usually all over your quarter panel.

Maybe the car in Moparnuts picture is not an untouched original, but a restored car?

It was still good to have the picture. Thanks

Also notice in the B5TA pic that the second grommet does not have a hole through it.

Good thing my original grommets came in a box, I bet that's tough to find.

This particular car came out of Ron Slobe's several years ago...

Can you post a few more pictures of the vent attaching to the tank? I have a 73 challenger, but removed all the emissions stuff and cannot determine how everything fits. I have the kit from year one and the last pictures that were posted look like part of the kit.

More pictures would help!!!!

I am new to this forum.

Thanks

Are you using your original 73 challenger gas tank with the 4 vents in the front?

What emission stuff did you remove?
