well we had a good weekend and I got the front shocks on and all the rest of the front wiring finished, drilled the holes in the firewall for the hood releases, put the front fenders and hood on for the last time(just need to install the hood latches) and set the bed on for its final fit and adjustments so from the cab forward paint is done(just need to sand and rub)
so I got it out side and got some more pics of it.
what do you think is it bright enough???? Ron....

so in a couple more weeks I will be CRUSIN'

Ron,
What is going on around the back of the bed? Almost looks like there is a 18" or longer platform out past the end of the bed? Are the cross braces at the top of the bed just in place to hold it together until you get the gate and fenders on or is the bed just going to be covered and for show? Paint is really bright and the headlight system is interesting. Have you tried the lights at night yet, how well do the low beams light up the front with the big section of nose in the way?

Your work is great as always, can't wait until I have the time to put into my projects, seeing your progress makes me itch to move forward on my own.
Brian

Brian, the original Idea for squattie was to make it a little pumper firetruck(like the one below) so I have been collecting some fire equipment to put on it, I have some hose nossels and a fire axe and some gauges. but now I am not sure if I will go with the firetruck theme so for now It will just be a utility bed, so the 18" area you refur to is like a rear step and the tubing you see at the top of the bed is the frame work for the hard bed cover that is hinged at the front and is raised by gas shocks

That plan doesn't have anything to do with that brush fire a few years ago that reached your parts cars does it?

Just seeing if my memory is still working at my older age.

no I had planned the firetruck Idea long befor those fires.
but this last fire Squattie was the only car that we took with us when we left(closest to being done).
the picture below is where i got the idea for a firetruck. Ron...

Anyone know what those wheels are? I am thinking those are pretty sweet looking, but might look better with a two tone paint, spokes the antique tan color, centers body color. Are they original era wheels or modern billets from vintage wheels?

are you talking about the wheels on the firetruck, I think those are made by Crager and they don't make them anymore, they were a chrome wheel and not billet ones. Ron...

Yes, the wheels on the Fire Truck are what I was talking about. So the wheels don't have covers for the centers?

If I remember right the rim part and the center were chrome plated steel and the "cover" was chromed plastic to cover the lugs and I remember they have 2 bolt patterns, I see them once in awhile at the swapmeets but most of them didn't look so good(rust, missing caps or scraped up) Ron....

it is coming along pretty good, I got it running again last weekend, and mounted the rear lites and fenders for their final fit and the gas tank is in for the final time..

while I have some fire truck equipment stuff like hose nossels, gauges and a few fire extinguisers. I am going to hold off on putting that stuff on as I might have a buyer for it that has a plumbing business. so it will just be a utility truck for now and we will see what happens

and none of the fire truck stuff is funtional except the fire extinguisers Ron...

Thanks guys, but squattie has been around for over 10 years and it feels like it will never get done, I try to get at least a little done on it every day now, I cant wait till its done so I can get the racetruck back in the garage and that will be my main focus and the 42 COE car hauler will get worked on in the side yard, cant wait

then the 47 panal truck gets mounted on the 93 dakota chassis as the next for sale car.

I am going to try to get back to 1 for sale 2 to keep,1 for sale 2 to keep. and hopefully in about 3 years I will have a nice collection of toys Ron....

with MATS and other things going on around here I still dont have the rear fenders and bed painted
but 1 rear fender IS fully mounted and I hope to get the other one finished up today and then I figure I have about 1-2 days of body work to have them ready for paint so maybe by this weekend they will be done . then I need to get the windows made and installed, get it registered and then take for some shake down runs Ron....

took a lot longer than I planed BUT:

today I finished up the paint on the bed and rear fenders for my Squattie truck.
so all the paint is now on the truck, all that needs paint is the glove box door(I'll paint that later)
so tomorrow I will finish up behind the cab and put the bed on for the last time
and I picked up the glue and trim for the windshield this week so the windshield should be in this weekend too.
with a little luck I should have it on the road sometime next week Ron....

Yes, the rear fenders are fiberglass model "A" fenders.

I finished inside the bed, back of the cab and the front of the bed with gravitex this morning

got a little more done tonight after it cooled down some.
I painted the bed cover framework with POR15 and test fitted the windshield Ron....

the bed cover is not real heavy, its made from 1/2x 1 1/2 thin wall tubing and 1" angle iron with 1/4 plywood, foam and vinal, I would guess its around 50 lbs
the gas shocks I had laying around but I think they are from a rear hatch omni or horizion or charger (again ) but they work great Ron...

Hey Graham, hows the charger coming along? looks good in your signature

Hi Ron, the Charger is coming along good but slower than i'd like. I want to get some coats of spray filler on it and block it down soon.

There has not been much hobby time for me this year. We have been quite busy at work and i've been taking the extra hours while I can. I bought a house last month, once my bank account recovers a bit there are some things I want to buy for the car.

Always great to see the progress on your stuff.

Hey Eric how is The Haze? Is it close to being back on the street?!

well things were set back by a day, my wife went into DMV and they gave her more paper work to fill out and get signed, its the luck of the draw when you go in there, so today I went to the dmv near us and got a very nice lady and I now have my sticker of operation
so if I can get the bed and fenders on it I will make it to cruisin grand tomorrow.

I need to mount the bed and bolt on the fenders and put on the tail lights and the back window for the sticker, add some more gas and make its maiden voyage Ron...

got the back window in and got the bed on and boled down for the last time, got the overflow tank on and hooked up.

but I still need to finish bolting up the front fenders.(had to unbolt then to get the running boards on)install and bolt up the rear fenders and hook up the tail lights, I need to put on a few more lug nuts. and I need to get and install some mirrors.

oh and i need to get some gas for it and put in new sparkplugs, I am not sure it will make it to grand tomorrow Ron....

Ah, you'll make it!

You, my friend, are one of the people I want to meet in person next time I'm out west! Of course, once I see your shop, I'll never leave...

You haven't built anything yet that I didn't over!

Eric

well thanks Eric
I think I might be a few hours away from having it the way I would like to have it ready. the big problem I have is it really takes 2 people to bolt on the rear fenders and I dont think I can get anyone here till later in the day. I plan to keep working on it and if someone shows up I will put them to work holding the wrench for the fender bolts

I cant wait till its done so I can get back on "ALL" the other projects. Ron...

OK its 3 PM friday and it looks like I might get it finished enough to take it to crusin Grand tonight

I got all the fenders back on and bolted up,I got a rear view mirror in it and its back on the ground and running.
I need to go out and get 10 gallons of gas for it and look for a outside mirror, I might put in the new spark plugs and clean the carb with some carb cleaner and then I was planing on taking it for a shakedown run.
but my son took his ratrod today and left his work van parked right in front of the gate and he has the keys with him
so I will have to wait till he comes home befor I can test drive it

but at least it very very close to being on the road now Ron......

I'll get some more pics of it when I get it out of the side yard

here are a few more for now

after many years of off and on working on this truck, it made it to its first cruise nite tonight. I started out of the street and hit the gas and the throttle cable broke so I ideled home and made the fix and washed the truck up and took a shower and headed to cruisin grand, it ran fine and temp stayed nice and low, it got a lot of looks and everyone wanted to know how the headlights worked
made it there and back with out any problems
maiden voyage turned out AOK Ron....

Killer truck. Was I surprised when I saw the gauge panel like from my '64Dog in front of that tilt steering wheel!

Finished up a few more things this week, I got some more gauges mounted in the dash and I got the kickdown linkage set a little better and I got all the "COOL CAR" insulation put in
and Justin put in a new better shifter in his rat rod and he got his side pipes finished(it sounds much better now).
well its time to get cleaned up and head to "Cruisin' Grand" Ron...

here are some more progress pics:

the gauges in squattie are from a mid 60's dodge van or PU.
I added the newer 3 gauges because I wanted a volt gauge instead of a amp gauge and the stock temp gauge only has a operating range and the new gauge has numbers.

Squattie weighs 3040 and Justins truck is 2300lbs it weighs more than I thought it would

and yes it is a blast to drive Ron..
