Thanks for the info john, sounds like the overdrive and extra clutch mods are likely overkill for my plans for the car. Since I have no intention of putting a roll bar in the car I won't be going that fast down the strip with it. I seem to recall some mods having to do with enlarging the oil supply holes in the OD shaft. Is this worth looking into or can I just leave it as-is?

I don't think it's overkill , you don't have to do the mods that are done to my trans , my truck is not stock , but the diesel and V10 put out over 400lb/ft of torque , the gasser were only 350ish. I would at minimum go the the Diesel/V10 clutch pack specs , it's not expensive and it's not going to hurt , especially the increase in clutches for the DIRECT clutch pack , it's not a straight thru output like a 727.

I would like to put one of these trans in a passenger car , I might talk a friend into it in the future once he starts that his engine is running at 187 degrees on the highway at 90mph ...

You can drill the oil hole that will help , also get the sonnax rear piston support, it's modified to increase oil flow/decrease leakage and changes the oiling to the rear drum support surface.

Hey john, I found this pdf somewhere, it's got an exploded view and parts breakdown for the a-500 trans. I will buy the correct manual, but for now this is something to look at and should be fairly close to the 518...

Now when you add an extra clutch/steel to the OD direct clutch pack, do any mods need to be done or will the extra clutch/steel go right in?

Also when you say you can mod to add an extra clutch/steel to the OD clutch pack in the rear of the main case, are you talking about the clutch pack this pdf diagram refers to as the "rear clutch"? Then the pressure plate it refers to as part "20" needs to be milled down by the thickness of an extra clutch/steel?

Also do you have any info on the drilling of the holes in the od shaft? Do you drill the holes in only the one shaft? Do you know to what size, or just the next size up?

I saw the sonnax rear piston setup for sale and it's not expensive at all so if it's a good idea I'll go for it.

Also, will a 727 governor kit work? Reason I ask is crt sells a 5800rpm governor kit for a 727 that I would really like.

As you can tell I'm a transmission newbie but not afraid to learn. Just want to do a half way decent job of setting this thing up the first time.

Okay well after doing some more reading and some more searching, it appears that PATC sells modified pressure plates for more clutches. They sell one for the overdrive direct clutch to allow you to upgrade to 10 clutches from the original 8. They also sell a pressure plate to allow you to run 5 clutches in the stock 4 clutch direct drum. Although for 30 bucks a piece, I could probably have a set of stock ones milled locally for a bit cheaper, if I knew the thicknesses.

Unless you known the people, I bet 30 bucks is going to be a fairly good price for what you need, and you know it will work since it is something they do every day. Well, in theory anyway

I want my fair share

Yeah I know, for the price I don't have a problem with just buying the pieces either.

Just something else you may want to consider, the front planetary is usually aluminum and may strip the splines out. You can upgrade to a 5 pinion steel planetary.

Also, change the reverse band servo to a steel or billet aluminum piece. The cast servos were prone to cracking. There is a guy under the trans section that offers billet aluminum servos.

I AM DOING A STREET STRIP PROJECT. YOU CAN GET ALL KINDS OF UPGRADES THAT THE DIESEL GUYS USE.

Well I've basically planned out the parts I plan to buy, in addition to any parts that will need replacing. One thing for sure, there is no shortage of upgrade parts out there for these transmissions and no limit to how much money you can spend.

One interesting thing, I talked to crt and they say the 518 governor is different but he can make me one at the shift rpm I want.
