I've been lurking here for a couple of months anticipating this day. I finally have in my possession a 72 Challenger. I hate to admit that I have always been a Chevy guy, but E bodies have always been my favorite body style.

Anyway... When I picked the car up yesterday, the dash and basically everything inside had been removed. The car won't turn over much less crank using the key. I can get it to turn over by shorting the starter relay, but of course I don't have any spark. I have disassembled and reassembled the bulkhead "stuff". I have fire to both sides (yeah I can plug in a connector correctly) of the bulkhead, but nothing at the battery side of of the fuse box. If I understand some of the diagrams I have seen online... does the main battery feed run through the ampmeter before it even goes to the fuse box?

Any help/tips/tricks for someone who hasn't been around this stuff in 20 years and then it was GM stuff?

I'll try and post up some pics later. I'm so excited to finally have a "toy". Moparts is an excellent resource for us newbs.

yes then after the ammeter it goes back to the bulkhead & out to the alt but between the ammeter and exiting out the bulkhead it T's to feed the ign sw/fuse box/headlight sw/horn

Thanks for the info! Is it safe to just bypass the gauge by connecting the wires directly together? My fusebox and bulkhead show signs of overheating so I am also considering bypassing the bulkhead connector for cranking/charging? Is that a good idea?

yes running another parallel wire in thru the bulkhead on each side for the 2 large feed wires as Nacho recommends is a good idea as the bulkhead connectors tend to corrode and those 2 circuits do flow alot of current. But I'm worried that you have alot more open and or poor/corroded connections (as evidenced by the hot/melted areas). There's some wiring diagrams at www.mymopar.com then click on tools on the left side then click on wiring diagrams.

Thanks again! I think I have a plan of attack for tomorrow afternoon. As for the other fusebox and bulkhead connections, they all looked good. Everything as a whole was pretty clean and in good shape to be 37 years old. Luckily the melting was very localized and not too bad. I also noticed the grounds were crappy so I think I have found a good use for that extra 4 gauge amplifier power wire I saved years ago

And to correct my first post... I USED to be a Chevy guy.

Here's some good info, bypass the bulkhead all together. Best thing I've done. No more dimming lights.

me too until I bought my 1st Mopar in 1975 a 68 GTX 440 4 sp 4.10 dana convertible! running/driving (only needed a radiator) for $500 & I was instantly hooked. If you are OK w loosing the ammeter you could run an 8ga lead from the batt positive directly over to the alt batt stud w a 12ga fusible link in series to protect it. This takes care of all of the bulkhead issues but I would take out each brass terminal w an eyeglass mini screwdriver & clean em & reinstall. If you need info on getting them out send me a PM
