Any tips on painting a 3 speed wiper motor? Mine looks terrible and I would like to give it a coat of paint. I'm also have some miscellaneous parts powder coated soon and would prefer to just have it powder coated as well. Is it easy to pull these things apart and put the back together? Will I need any gaskets, etc...?

...the housing can usually be made respectable with a wire wheel.
get 2 or 3 "different" spray bombs of gold and one of silver.
alternately dust the motor housing with all four in no particular pattern so it has large sections of each shade blended and clear coat when finished.(gold and alum. are soft paints)
it won't look like the restored gold irridated ones but will look nice and close to original which was quite dull
splash the wires and back w/red oxide primer....

Here is a tip, send it to Jules and never have to deal with it again. Do it right once. 3 speed wiper motors look really bad, and cheap unless they are done correctly.

Jules is the top choice, but if you are on a budget (like I am), you can do a decent job on your own.

Remove the cover on the transmission.

Clean the entire assembly using a Scotch Brite pad.

Clean the cover for the transmission and the harness with 409 or Simple Green.

Carefully tape the motor portion off as well as the part where the cover was. Paint this with Eastwood Aluminum (or equal). Remove the tape and allow this to dry for 2-3 days.

Using a painters tape, tape off the newly painted portion and spray the body - here is the point of contention - black. Some should be zinc chromate, so the Eastwood system would work, but I like Black. It my car after all.

Clean all of the hardware on a wire wheel (polish the ground strap). and reassemble. Retape the harness and there you go. I think my motor looks decent and it only cost about 20 bucks to do. That gives me more $$ for the budget!

Thanks I've seen his work and its amazing, however I can't justify spending $300 on a wiper motor.

Thanks I might try your approach. What did you do with the wires? It looks like they are soldered on the case...just unsolder then paint, resolder later?

You may want to re-read this response especially the last line. I have never seen what I consider a respectible job on a three speed wiper motor which was painted. Plating is the right way to go. Also the price charged for doing it right (complete restoration) not only includes the finish but the internals are restored, wires and any other worn parts are replaced. That said, you may want to consider removing the barrell and have it plated.

Well I was in the same boat as you. My wiper motor looked horrible. One of the past owners spray bombed the motor black in the engine compartment. Here is a pic of it.

I took the wiper motor assembly off and cleaned it up real good. Sprayed the transmission part with Eastwood's Aluma Blast, the motor with a gold from the touch-up aisle, the motor end housing with a different aluminum paint. I repainted the epoxy covering the wires with a brushed on red Rustoleum enamel. Came out good for what it is. If you want perfection, go to Jules as mentioned. Here's a pic of the wiper asssembly about 2 years old now.

Ronnman...your wiper motor looks very good. Yours is probably the nicest one I've seen that has been "home restored"

For me personally though, I can't justify spending a ton of money on the body/paint and then NOT have Jules do the motor. Anything less won't cut it. I'm shipping mine to him tomorrow.

Ronnman, your paint job looks fantastic. I think it is a great option for guys on a budget and I appreciate you showing us your handy work. I also really like the stuff Jules is doing also. Some top notch stuff. I guess I will wait till my car is painted and on it's way to being put back together to decide what my budget can afford and how the rest of the job is going to decide what route I am going. A guy certainly could do a home restore like you did to get by for a while then upgrade to a "Jules motor" when money allows it.

Also, remember Jules is taking the wiper assembly completely apart, cleaning, servicing, replacing wear items and then replating the components. It's more than an exterior makeover. I had just choose to clean and paint mine because it looked so hideous.

You budget minded people are not looking at the whole picture. You must have never had to try to replace the entire wiper system with the dash in place. Save money on stuff you can get to and unbolt in a few minutes. If the car is apart, there is no way I am going to not replace with correctly restored parts the wiper assembly, master cyl. and heater box and dash assembly.

I love my time and efforts and arms and hands and skin too much to do it more than once. And even though everyone in being nice, as soon as you look at the painted wiper motor you know what you are thinking.

If your budget is too tight to restore the wiper motor and never have to touch it again you need a different hobbie. After years and thousands and thousands of dollars to paint your car and you skip the wiper motor???

I understand that people are on a budget. If I couldn't get mine properly done (plated) then I'd chemically clean it or soda blast it and leave it alone rather than paint it.

Another teaser; wiper motor by jules;

They are not soldered (from what I remember), just tape them.
