I just got back from my machine shop and I was not happy with the quality of the paint on my block. I supplied the paint to him, I used Dupli-Color engine enamel Chrysler Orange (DE 1622) and it came out flat and dull. My machine shop had me come down and look at because he stated that he was not impressed with the quality. There are 3 coats of paint on it now, and the paint came out very thin. He says he will repaint it for free with the orange he stocks (chebby orange) if I would like but, I do not want that, even though they look about the same. What brand are you guys using? Did I just get a "bad can of paint"

I used the duplicolor hemi orange on mine as well and it was crap. Not the glossiest but not flat either, that part I had no problem with. The paint is so thin, super low solids paint, takes 100,000 coats to get full coverage.

VHT, though not Hemi orange. I think the VHT is kind of thin too. I followed the directions on the can, 2 light coats, one medium-wet coat, bake at 200* for 1 hour (except for the block itself of course). I've had good results with everything that has been cured.

Each part was painted individually and I'll have to go back before it goes in and get all the parting lines. Or not. I like that it will all come apart easily. I sure hope I don't have to do that though.

Best of luck.

Ya, he has three coats on it so far and it looks so thin, it only looks like he did 1 skim coat. Is there an engine paint that looks good and will cover in a few coats?

I saw plasti-kote also sells a hemi orange engine paint. Anyone try that brand? Sure can't be any worse than the dupli-color.

I found back in the spring while at Autozone that Rust-Oleum now has a Chrysler Hemi orange part #248957 so I tried it. It has high solids applies easily and covers good. It has held up good so far.

that dupli color hemi orange is what i used

stock hemi ornage is not that glossy IMO

too glossy and it look chebby orange

I painted the vc with rustolium satin black with a brush..they turned out great..but the 35 yr old vc still show there age and rust pitts

I have painted the frame, under hood, inside cab, under side of inner fenders with rustolium gloss black with an HVLP gun and it looks very good IMHO

I did the 2 cowls and the hood of the stepside with the satin and it looks great also

the PPG engine paint IIRC is the good stuff for engines but pricy

I kinda like the dull look of the duplicolor hemi orange and used 4 cans on my 440 so far, have a 5th can for touch up as it goes together

I will be looking at the rustolium hemi orange for the SB though, just to see what it looks like when done

just my but to glossy is chebby colors

plasticoat is by far the best spray bomb on the market for color, coverage and durability.

The problem I've had with the Duplicolor is flaking in spots after about a year. I'm currently pulling my motor back out and re-doing cam and paint. I thought about using Eastwoods engine paint, but think I'll use Duplicolor again with primer under it..The gloss/flat issue doesn't bother me, I just want it to stay on there..

If you are referring to the MP paint, lets hope they have addressed the issue of the paint not coming out of the can when sprayed.

After reading up on the best spray bombs here on Moparts, I bought a case of the Duplicolor 1622 for my '71 GTX'x 440. I sprayed a set of valve covers after I had them hot tanked and then scuffed, along with a coat of Duplicolor high temp engine primer they look great! Not too dull, not too glossy... The can I used was sooooo much better than the old MP crap.

Do you want the REAL color or just a good lookin glossy show shine (but not OEM)color ? For those lookin for the OEM type paint contact Frank Badalson for the CORRECT color and yes , it should not be glossy like most spray cans . I have also use the Plasticoat paint but it seemed a bit too orange and glossy but I think its the next best choice.

I used the MP paint from the Dealer...Street Hemi Orange...Race was too Dark...(or was it the other way around?!?!?)

My stroker block is getting Dupont sprayed on it. HVLP style...It looks great, it has chemicals in it that make it last longer, and I dont need to clear it. The paint lays down more evenly.

If there was only a way to pour the paint in a can and pressurize it, make my own spray bomb...I would

Race Hemi Orange is lighter/brighter than Street Hemi Orange. 1957 Omaha Orange is the closest match to Race Hemi Orange that I have found.

You can put automotive paint in spray cans actually...there are a few shops around the St. Louis, MO that do that. I believe it was $19 a can last time we had it done. (Assuming you provide the paint.)

Do you want "Pretty" or do you want "correct"? If you want Correct, get your paint from Frank Badelson. He has all of the factory flavors in stock.

*When describing Race Hemi Orange most would call it a "pumkin" Orange with a more yellowish cast rather than the reddish cast of Street hemi Orange. It was used on all 62,63,&64 Max Wedge engines, and all Hemis (Street & Race Hemi's) from 1964-1968. There may have been some late 68 Street Hemis that recieved Street Hemi Orange but to date I haven't seen a proven original.

I can't tell you how many cans of the old MP engine paint i have thrown out , never used the whole can .

Last can I used was the new resto orange , came out good , of course they discontinued it

I like the plasti-kote for rattle can jobs , close enough for my junk

I have thrown them out because they didnt spray. I remember puncturing a few cans that wouldnt spray otherwise and letting the paint fizz out into a jar, getting enough of it from 3-4 cans...and then pouring it into my HVLP and spraying it...Was a mess for a bit but the parts came out pretty darn good

Eastwood has the spray bomb that you can pressurize.Prep, prep and more prep is the key to successful paint. And a final thinner wash.

Bit of an update- I took back the Duplicolor I've been using for several years because it was easy to find, and found some Plastikote on the other side of town. I painted some parts over the weekend and the Plastikote goes on much thicker than Duplicolor, enough so that you wonder at first if it is going to flow out, but it looks great when dried .

I just picked up a can of plasti-kote, I am dropping it off today for my machine shop to paint it over the duplicolor thin paint. I will take some before and after pics while I am there.

I thought I read somewhere along the line that the 1962-4 MW engines color was Omaha Orange, which is the same color as the Race Hemi Orange. Not sure when they changed the name, but after 1964 for sure.

I used "Race Hemi Orange" P4120751AB for mine. It did come out pretty thin, but after two coats and a touch up I was content with the results.

Yep, just did my brother's 383 in turqouise with the new Mopar paint. Covered great, plenty thick, and no problems with the cans not spraying. Very satisfied.

I bought two cans of MP paint at Fall Fling 2008, and had no problems with it at all. My car's been back on the road since mid-January and it seems to be holding up well.

Yep, just did my brother's 383 in turqouise with the new Mopar paint. Covered great, plenty thick, and no problems with the cans not spraying. Very satisfied.

although the way the flash is on this picture it looks brighter than it actually is....
The turquoise is a very funny color... it looks way different, depending on the light.

Plastikote here.

Tried the MP Chrysler Hemi Orange years ago and it was really thin. Then they changed the formula and it was much better but the price went up considerably.

I think the Plastikote ran me 5.99 per can at CarQuest?
