Can someone simply explain how the cam determines what size (stall) converter to use. I think I have a idea but have no way to put it into words here.
And what are the differeces in a 9.5 or 10 inch converter..or better put why would you use one over the other??..what are the determing factors?
Thnx Chuck

...i'd like to see some input on this as well.
i think long duration and overlap make good power at hi rpm but rob lo end torque.
you probably wouldn't want a converter to stall at 2400 rpm if your engine doesn't start to make torque or power until 3000 rpm...

Simply put, the more radical the cam, the less power it will make at lower rpm.The more Radical the cam, the more stall speed needed. When it comes to diameter, usually the smaller converter will be more efficient than a larger one for a given stall speed. as an example: A 9.5 inch 4000 stall will probably be more efficient than a 10 inch 4000 stall. When choosing a converter, a lot of things should be taken into account, such as car weight, gear ratio, etc. Your best bet is to pick a reputable company and call them. Give them all the pertinent info on your car and its intended use and they can make a suggestion.

A-1 Performance in Vancouver, Wa is very reputable. I race with Bowdish and Gary Ericksen, his (and my) tranny guru. They're good people and can help you dial in the right converter or trans for your car. I used Continental for years but I've had better luck since I went with A-1.
