Where is the best place to get a slide hammer to remove the front pump. Or is there a different method? Thanks

I just used 2 long bolts to drive it out. I know, not the preferred method but it works.

I use a bar under the chain to pop the pump out.

A slide hammer is a body shop tool and nothing fancy, cheap. You just need a couple bolts (3/8-16 on a 727) coupled to the slide hammer. The other methods do work too.

Sometimes it takes me two or three pulls now You can take a short piece of chain and hook it under the two bolts (that are there to be used in removing the front pump, there half way up from the bottom bolts) and use a lever to pull it out by bracing it on the other side of the bellhousing

I do the same as Wild Bill,
Just thread 2 pieces of all thread in and it pushes the pump out.
They are blind holes, not through holes.
No chains,bars,or slide hammers needed.

Go to AutoZone (or local parts house) and buy a cheap dent puller. They are usually less than $10. Take the little threaded tip (that holds screw) off, and the end is male thread and screws right in front pump. There's your slide hammer.
Good Luck

I like to make tools. Go to the hardware store and get two long 3/8 bolts, like 8 inch if you can find them. Now you need 2 pieces of something heavy with a 3/8 hole thru the center. Round stock like someone suggested works well. Instant slide hammers.

I have probably less-than 5 bux in mine .....

2 12" 3/8 bolts ... 20 or so large "fender" washers on each bolt ...

I have used this way on many MANY tranny rebuilds over the years.

Maybe a Mallet

Thanks guys. I am going to try a few of these suggestions tomorrow. Didn't get a chance today as I was working on replacing my diagonal link.

I use two 5/16 short studs with a slot cut in one end and thread it down into the case holes through the 2 threaded pump holes. Then use two 3/8 bolts to act like jack screws and pry the pump off evenly. Without the 5/16 studs you may deform the case threads.

I have a pump puller, but rarely use it(on TF's anyway). Grab the stator support with one hand and and tap the edge of the bellhousing with a plastic 3 lb deadblow with the other. Pump pops right off- been doing like that for years.
